The Jackets rallied for 11 runs in the final two innings to hand NC State their first conference loss. The Jackets are now 3-3 in the conference.
The game started out much like the first two games as Dave Duncan was roughed up for 7 runs in 3.2 innings of work. Redshirt junior Jared Hyatt kept the Jackets in the game before being relieved in the 8th. Hyatt was credited with the win. Danny Payne came in from centerfield to pitch the final 1.1 innings and record the save.
The Jackets exploded for 18 hits including homers by Wes Hodges (2), Whit Robbins, Steven Blackwood and Danny Payne. Hodges and Blackwood led the attack with 4 hits each. The game was especially sweet for Blackwood who was benched, for the first time since his freshman year, in yesterday's game.
The Jackets scored 29 runs in the series but were only able to salvage one win. They next open a three game set with North Carolina Friday night at 7 pm. This is a crucial series for the Jackets as UNC is in our division. The Heels go into our series with a 4-2 ACC record. It will be a match-up of one of the best pitching staffs in the league versus one of the best hitting teams in the league. Andrew Miller and Daniel Bard are both expected to go very high in this year's baseball draft.
