Summer Happenings

Vu and I made the trip down to "The Rusty C" Friday to view one of our top-rated recruits, Jeff Ussery, who was participating in the Wood Bat Association Championships. Jeff is playing for an all-star team from Savannah. He looks like he'll be another in a long line of smooth fielding shortstops.

Jeff is playing for an all-star team from Savannah. He looks like he'll be another in a long line of smooth fielding shortstops. Assisant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Josh Holliday was in attendance and described him as a very good player.

I also had a chance to pick up some additional information on current and recently drafted players.

1. Tim Gustafson was working out prior to the game and will be heading to Orleans to pitch a few games prior to signing with the Braves.

2. It is also possible that two of Ussery's teammates will be in our 2008 class as well. They are second baseman Thomas Nichols from Lee County and centerfielder Jeff Rowland from Greenbriar.

3.Incoming pitcher Charlie Blackmon is not pitching in the Cape this summer due to a sore elbow. He will be ready for fall practice.

4. I had a chance to talk to Wes Hodges. He said he loved his time in Cleveland in spite of spending many hours with doctors. He had more MRI work done and it's possible that he may need surgery. He'll be heading back for another MRI in 4 weeks. The good news is that he'll be signing with Cleveland this Tuesday. He went through a lot of pain to keep playing during our run to Omaha. You have to give him a lot of credit for that.

5. People of note at the championships included Coach Perno from Georgia and Victor Menocal.

6.

7. The highlight of the championships was watching Assistant Coach Nick Scherer coach first base for the East Cobb Yankees.

8. We ended the day by making the trip to Rome to catch up with Lee Hyde. It appears that he will be used as their closer. Also in attendance was Lee's family.
