Enrollment Plans for Melton and Threet

Three players were expected to enroll in January from Georgia Tech's highly rated 2007 recruiting class. QB Steven Threet and WR Tyler Melton were two of the three. Due to an injury one will now wait a little longer to enroll and the other plans on practicing with the team in spring.

Texas wide receiver Tyler Melton's plans for enrolling early at Georgia Tech have changed. Due to an injury in his knee, he'll no longer be able to take advantage of the opportunity to begin practicing with the team in spring. "I tore my ACL and now I'll start school in summer," said Melton from his girlfriend's basketball game on Tuesday night.

Typically, many first year players try to begin in summer to get a couple of classes under their belt before the grind of fall practice starts. As for Melton, it is unlikely that he'll be able to play in 2007, so a redshirt seems most likely for his first season.

There are still two others from Tech's 2007 class who will enroll early. Those players are both Scout.com 4-star athletes who could make an early impact on the team next season. Those players are DE Derrick Morgan (Pennsylvania) and QB Steven Threet (Michigan).

For the two who enroll early, they'll still have to sign their letters of intent but can't do so until the actual signing day in February like the others. By them enrolling in school early though, it essentially binds them in the same way an LOI would. They are not allowed, however, to actually sign on campus.

Because they have to sign off campus, some of the commits and their parents have arranged for some of the guys to meet up in Atlanta for a get together on signing day. "I believe that a lot of commitments who are close to Atlanta and then Derrick Morgan and myself, we're going to be all together at the ESPN Zone and sign together there," said Threet. "I will have already been in school for over a month but we're going to sign in February."

Threet will be on campus shortly after the New Year. "I'm leaving home January 4th to head down there," said Threet.
