A big-time battle is on for the services of defensive end Keith Wells, who'll choose among some of the top football programs in college football. With over 20 offers in hand, he has narrowed the list to six and has a tentative plan for when he'll make his announcement. Keith gives insight as to his current thoughts on his six finalists.

Although Keith continues to collect offers, he's not really interested in continuing to count them as he has enough to work with now. His offers number, "somewhere around that 20 range but I've narrowed my list of schools down so I'm not really looking for more offers," said Wells. "I'm just basically trying to evaluate the schools I have and make my decision from those schools."

Without further ado, here are the six schools Keith will choose from to make his college choice. "I narrowed it down to six schools: Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Ohio State," said Wells.

Keith gave his brief thoughts on all of the six finalists.

Georgia Tech: "The big thing with Georgia Tech is the feel I get when I'm on that campus. I mean, everything just feels – I guess because I'm from Atlanta – like everybody just seems so close down on Georgia Tech's campus."

North Carolina: "North Carolina – I love their coaching. I mean, they have Butch Davis and, in a lot of people's opinion, the best defensive line coach in the country – which is Coach (John) Blake. So, the coaching really stands out to me at North Carolina."

Auburn: "Auburn – I haven't really been there but, from what I can tell about Auburn, a great school – has a legacy of great football programs and they basically always have a good record when it comes to football."

Ohio State: "Ohio State – the same thing – a lot of great football programs and a great overall schools. And, from what I know, their facilities are amazing."

Florida State: "Florida State – I haven't really been there, but great, great players to come out of Florida State, great football programs and great coaching."

Florida: "And Florida – Florida's probably the best all-around school I have on my list because they have great coaching, a legacy of great football teams and great players to come out of Florida. The campus is amazing and, I'd have to say… I don't know, but Florida that's just a really, really good school.

Six is still a big number if he's planning on finishing up with recruiting before the season starts. "I'm planning on narrowing my list in a few weeks," said Wells. "So, I'm going to narrow it down to probably 3 or 4 schools. That's why I'm basically just doing my evaluations right now on these schools and just basically seeing who'll make my list and where I think I'll fit in the best."

Before narrowing the list, will there be more unofficial visits in store?

"Oh definitely, I'm going to Ohio State within the next 2 or 3 weeks," said Wells. "And I'm going to head over to Auburn once I get back from Florida and Florida State. I'm going to take another visit to Florida their little Friday Night Lights and then next I'm going to head over to Florida State. Once I get back from Florida State, I'll probably head over to Auburn and by that time I'll have seen all of the teams on my list. So, by the end of the summer, I'll hopefully have a decision."

Will these upcoming visits play a big role in whether the schools will make the cut or not?

"Definitely," said Wells. "I've seen basically all of the top schools on my top 6 twice except for Auburn, Florida State and Ohio State. I've seen Georgia Tech plenty of times. I've seen North Carolina twice. This will be my second time seeing Florida, once I'm back down. I will have seen Florida State and Ohio State as well. So, these visits are very crucial to wrapping up my recruiting process."

Keith will also have some influence on his decision from a very important member of his family.

"My mom, she really has a big influence because, of course, I really want her to see me play," said Wells. "I know she would want me to go somewhere she thinks I'm in good hands and where it's a good feel, it's a good atmosphere for the campus. So, she has a really big role in this whole process but I know that decision's up to me and she'll support whatever I decide to do."

Has mom given any input to date on which of the schools she likes? "She really, really likes Georgia Tech," said Wells. "I mean, we both really, really like Georgia Tech. And she really hasn't seen a lot of other places except for Clemson, North Carolina, Georgia and that's it. But she really, really likes Georgia Tech. The coaches stay in pretty good contact with her also, so I guess that's why they have the edge."

Look for Wells' mother to continue accompanying him on these visits so that she too can form an opinion.

"Yes, she's actually going to Florida and Florida State with me," said Wells. "And then me and her are going to drive down to Auburn and we're actually going to drive back up to Ohio State. So, she will have already seen all of the schools and she'll tell me how she feels about these schools and her gut feeling and I'll make my decision based on my evaluation of the schools. But she also has some kind of input on my decision."

Mom has already been a big part of the thought process so far. "We talk about it all the time," said Wells. "We'll sit down and we'll go over the good things and the bad things about each one of the schools. We'll talk about it and, I know, once we start taking these visits, we'll really have a lot more to look at because right now we're just going off researched stuff and from what a lot of these coaches are telling us."

When can everyone expect to read about the next cut and final decision?

"More than likely, my list will be narrowed around the end of July," said Wells. "And I'll probably make [a decision] within the beginning going toward the middle of August; probably that first week or second week of August."
