Safety Carlton Lewis, of Saint Augustine, recently named his three top schools in recruiting but with an additional offer, has now expanded it to a top 4. Lewis talks about his performance at some summer camps, what he's looking for in a school and when he's likely to make a decision.

Last week it was a top three of Wake Forest, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech for Carlton. "Really, it's four now," said Lewis, who just added an offer from South Florida, moving them onto his favorites list as well.

Carlton commented briefly on each of those four schools.

Georgia Tech: "I like the coaches and just felt good around them and the campus."

South Carolina: "I felt real comfortable around the coaches and get along real good."

Wake Forest: "They have good facilities."

South Florida: "[Safeties] Coach [Tony] Douglas seems like a good coach to play under."

Rounding out his list of offers are schools including Illinois, Indiana, Marshall and Western Kentucky.

The 6'3", 190-pound safety has at least briefly seen parts of the campuses of his 4 favorites. One of the visits was to Georgia Tech for their July 7th individual camp. Though he didn't get to tour the campus, he did see some football facilities and participated on the practice field. "I did real good, especially in 7-on-7," said Lewis about is performance at Tech.

Apparently the Tech coaches agreed with Carlton's assessment of his camp performance. Shortly after the camp, he received an offer from them. "They said I move very good," said Lewis. "I move up on the ball real good."

Carlton would like to get a more detailed look at schools like GT and other favorites since he really didn't get the full tour the first time. Having a good campus is one of the things Carlton is looking for in his college choice. "I just want to make sure it has a good campus, because a lot of these schools I didn't get to see the campus, just the football facilities," said Lewis on his selection factors. "And to feel like the coaching staff is right for me to be around."

Lewis thinks he may make his decision by September 1st. Part of the reason could be that kids are committing earlier these days and scholarships could become scarce at the schools he's interested in. "I've noticed a lot of kids committing early and it's making everybody else commit early too," said Lewis. "I take that under consideration too. If it's somewhere I really want to go, I might just commit there. I keep an eye on it"

All four of Carlton's favorites though are on the same level right now. "When one stands out then you go to the other one and that one stands out with it," said Lewis.

Another school Carlton visited recently was Florida for their Friday Night Lights. They have not offered but thought he performed well at their camp. "They just said I'm a good looking kid and they'll keep in touch," said Lewis.
