Joe Jones Hints at Leader

Defensive End prospect Joe Jones, from Virginia Beach (Va.), had a change in his visit schedule for the final month of recruiting. Instead of a visit to Tennessee, Jones has returned from a weekend trip to Virginia Tech.

With the Tennessee visit cancelled, Joe's trips to Virginia Tech and Maryland were each moved up. Joe attributed the cancelled Tennessee visit to a lack of a firm written offer, so he could concentrate on the schools that seemed more firm to him. "They wanted me to come down but not like an official offer," said Jones. "They offered but they haven't had nothing to show for it written."

As for the Virginia Tech visit over the weekend Joe Jones said, "It was pretty good. I was only there for Saturday, so for the time I was there it was all right."

Joe visited with Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer at the end of the trip. "I met Coach Beamer this morning," said Jones. "I told him my visit was nice. He showed me the depth chart and all – I'd be the fourth defensive end."

When interviewing Joe last week, he mentioned that he wanted to study the depth charts for his top teams to see where he'd fit in. He described his findings saying, "Georgia Tech only had three defensive ends, and Virginia Tech only had three. Georgia Tech recruited two and Virginia Tech recruited two, so it's pretty much the same really."

When asked if those teams represented his final two teams. "Yeah, and I'm going to take the Maryland visit next weekend too." So Maryland rounds out his top three. When asked if Maryland could still figure heavily in the decision, he said, "It just depends on how the visit goes." He did say he'd have a decision in, "probably about a week."

Overall he rated the shortened trip to VT, "about an eight." Joe was asked to list any positives or negatives about his trip. "The positive things were the football players, the coach – all the coaches were real nice, real cool. The negatives were probably just the location."

When asked what in particular he didn't like about the location he answered, "Just how it's in the middle of nowhere it seemed like."

With visits to his top two teams in the books and the Maryland visit coming next week, Joe answered the question as to whether he could name a slight leader at this point with, "Probably Georgia Tech." Top Stories
