"I just got offered and I decided to commit and I'm really, really excited about this," said Drummond shortly after he pledged to become a Yellow Jacket this afternoon.
This was a scenario he had already thought about before. "Yeah, I was planning on committing on the spot," said Drummond. "I actually found out I was going to get it yesterday – it was awesome. It's like Christmas in June. Coach (Jeff) Monken actually texted my coach, so I got to see that text."
It led to a restless night for Daniel with all of the coming excitement. "I was just… my mind was going crazy last night," said Drummond. "I decided this morning that Tech's where I wanted to be."
With Daniel there always seems to be a debate about what position he'll actually play in college. He cleared that situation up… kind of. "They said they were going to start me off at B-Back and maybe eventually work to defensive end," said Drummond. "We'll just see."
He doesn't seem to have a preference between the two positions and wouldn't object to playing either or both. "That's exactly where I play for Flowery Branch," said Drummond. "I play B-Back and defensive end and I love them both." With his ability and willingness to play where needed he'll certainly give Tech coaches some personnel flexibility down the road.
Incoming GT quarterback Jaybo Shaw is a buddy and former teammate of Drummond's. At the time Daniel and I spoke, Jaybo hadn't heard the news but the two had talked a lot in the past about this possibility. "We've talked about it," said Drummond. "I've told him that's where I wanted to be and that if they offered me I'd probably commit. So, we're excited. We're going to get to play with each other again."
Daniel has another teammate in defensive end Izaan Cross who is also being pursued by the Yellow Jackets. "We're starting on him; we think we're going to get him but… I think he's going to wait until after the season or in the middle."
In the end, why was Georgia Tech the answer for Daniel? "I love the coaches," said Drummond. "It's a family atmosphere here. And I can be here and if I want to go home for the weekend I can. It's 30 minutes home and that's awesome. If I'm 10 hours away I can't just go home whenever I want to."
When mentioning 10 hours away from home Daniel probably had in mind his two latest offers before the Tech offer was extended. "The other day Oklahoma State offered me and Arkansas offered me a few days ago," said Drummond. "But, you know, I can't really see myself being out there."
Drummond was asked if it ever got frustrating waiting for the Division I schools to offer before his bounty of offers in the past week. "Yeah definitely, but I knew it was going to come so I was just being patient and just kept working hard. That's all I could do."
Daniel, who says he's now 6'3", 225 pounds measured out well in a recent camp at Georgia Tech. He mentioned that he was timed at that came at 4.61 in the 40 and had a vertical leap of 35.5 inches. Results from this weekend's camp will be listed later on.
A healthy understanding of the in-state football rivalry between Tech and uga will be appreciated by Tech fans. "I was at a passing camp and he (Georgia Linebacker Coach John Jancek) was like, ‘So, are you coming to our camp on Saturday?' I was like, ‘Actually, I'm going to be at Tech's.' And he was like ‘ok' and he left."
