Ricky Johnson Considers Options

The word option is a big part of Lafayette, Louisiana athlete Ricky Johnson's vocabulary these days. Not only will he have many options as to which position he plays in college but he'll also have the option of playing both football and basketball at the next level. Scout.com's 74th ranked receiver will be exploring those options in the coming months.

We caught up with Ricky Johnson after he had just helped lead his basketball team to a tournament win at his high school. Johnson is a talented player who can play both the one and two positions. He's getting attention for both football and basketball from college coaches. After being slowed by a hamstring injury in the spring, Ricky is back to full strength and getting ready for the upcoming football season. His team will use his versatility by using him at quarterback, wide receiver, running back and corner back. This weekend's basketball tournament was a brief break from preparing for the upcoming football season.

Since last talking to Scout.com, Ricky has picked up additional offers from Texas A&M and Nebraska. These go along with the offers he previously received from Tulsa, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tulane, Southern Mississippi and Georgia Tech. Mississippi is recruiting Ricky as an athlete, Tulane as a running back, Georgia Tech as a quarterback and the remainder as a wide receiver.

When asked which position he preferred, Johnson replied that he prefers the wide receiver position. He did, however, point out that a school like Georgia Tech has assured him that he may get the chance to play wide receiver but they feel he's a good fit for their option offense.

Three of the schools that have offered Johnson for football have also been talking to him about playing basketball. Tulane, Tulsa, and Georgia Tech have all discussed having Ricky also play basketball. Coach John O'Connor of Georgia Tech is one of the coaches that Johnson mentioned as having talked to him and his coach.

Ricky continues to list Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia Tech as his top three. LSU has not offered Johnson at this time. Defensive backs coach Charles Kelly from Georgia Tech, and Willy Robinson (Defensive Coordinator / Safeties Coach) of Arkansas are two coaches that Johnson talks to on a regular basis. When asked if he had a timetable for making a decision, Ricky said that he'd like to make his decision before the season starts.

July may be the month that Johnson's final destination becomes a lot clearer. He'll be attending LSU's camp where he hopes to pick up an offer and then he'll be heading to Atlanta to visit Georgia Tech. Those will be the first two schools that he's visited. With his football season fast approaching, we'll soon be hearing from Ricky about his decision.
