Introducing Denzel McCoy

Northview High School's Denzel McCoy should be a well sought after recruit this year even as a junior in high school. The 6'4" 274 lineman already picked up some verbal scholarship offers from Alabama, Memphis and Penn State. Saturday, on a visit to Georgia Tech with his parents, Denzel picked up his latest offer. Northview High School's Denzel McCoy should be a well sought after recruit this year even as a junior in high school. The 6'4" 274 lineman already picked up some verbal scholarship offers (official offers are given out to juniors beginning Sept. 1st) from Alabama, Memphis, and Penn State. Saturday, on a visit to Georgia Tech with his parents, Denzel picked up his latest offer. He talked a little of his visit.

"I watched the practice and the scrimmage. It went great. I was watching the defensive line. They are really good there with Vance Walker and number 93 (Michael Johnson). I got to talk to Vance Walker some afterwards and get to know him and what he thought of Tech. They really showed me great hospitality. It was very nice and pretty interesting. I liked it a lot. They showed me a lot of things I didn't know about like the new equipment and new uniforms. The program is going through some changes, so it was really cool. The coaches told me they were offering me today. They want me as a defensive tackle."

How did McCoy's parents like the visit to Tech?

"My parents loved it. My Mom likes football and everything but she was really into and had a lot of questions. My Dad was big into it too, he really enjoyed himself. They like the great academics there."

This summer, Denzel has been able to see Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, NC State, North Carolina and Clemson. He didn't have any favorite visits as he said, "They all seem like they could be a good fit. I'm going to take my time, wait awhile and look around." He says he would also like to see Vanderbilt and LSU. When it comes to his recruitment, this is what he had to say about what he'll be looking for:

"First off, Academics is the most important thing. I want to be a computer engineer, which Georgia Tech is very strong in and will definitely help. Then I really want to be comfortable with the coaching staff. Also, I want to see how successful the teams are."

Denzel said he has spent the last year working out with Georgia Tech free safety Cooper Taylor. He also mentioned his good friend Jay Finch has committed to the Yellow Jackets. "It definitely helps to know someone already there to make it more comfortable," he said. These relationships combined with the great academics and the fact that Tech sends many defensive players to the NFL has the Yellow Jackets already in good shape with McCoy.

Location doesn't seem to be that important of a factor for him but he said it could be a good thing to play so close to home. Look out for Denzel McCoy as there will be more updates to come on him this coming fall and spring.
