Orwin Smith Makes His Decision

Orwin Smith, the highly rated running back from Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama had a big announcement for the fans of one school tonight. Orwin was down to Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, and Southern Miss. Which one of those would be the lucky team?

Orwin Smith – Profile

Orwin, on our last conversation you told me you were going to the Georgia Tech - Florida State game. How did that go?

"It was awesome, just flat out great. The players, coaches and fans were all pumped up for the game and the game was one I'll never forget."

Do you have some news to tell us from that visit?

"Yes sir I do. I called Coach Johnson tonight and told him that I am committing to Georgia Tech. I'm done. Georgia Tech was one of three schools that had me as a top running back in their recruiting plans and I felt that Georgia Tech was the best fit and best school out all of them. I am rock solid to Georgia Tech."

What were the other two schools that had you as a top priority on their list of running backs?

"Vanderbilt and Southern Miss were the other two. There were four or five schools that had me in their plans but were planning on taking four or five running backs. Still Georgia Tech was the best of all of them combined. I made the right choice for me. I wanted to go to a school that really wanted me and would give me every opportunity to play and from watching how Coach Johnson handles his players; I know I will get that chance."

What else about Georgia Tech made you feel they were the right choice?

"Georgia Tech has a great environment to start off with. I got a chance to hang out with the players and they are great, made me feel like I was a part of the team already. Also, the fans, what can you say, they are great. I heard someone made a sign for me at Yellow Jacket Alley but I missed it. That's a great feeling just knowing that fans went out of their way to make me feel welcomed and wanted at Georgia Tech. Plus, Georgia Tech is a great academic school period. Add that in with a beautiful campus, you got a great combination. It doesn't hurt either that Georgia Tech is a program that is fast rising and will be a force to contend with for years to come too."

If other schools start calling you and trying to get you to consider them, what will be your answer?

"I think they'll know that publically that I am 100% committed to Georgia Tech but I'll tell them that I am solid to Georgia Tech. I'm locked."

What did Coach Johnson say when you called him with the news?

Coach Johnson was very excited and happy. He told me to be ready to come in and work. He told me to be ready. He was real happy with my news as I am."

Sounds like you are ready to go to Atlanta right now?

"Yes sir, I'm ready. I am very happy with this decision. It was easy to make once I saw how much Coach Johnson and his staff wanted me and how all the other factors just lined up in favor of Georgia Tech."

How about your football season at Central, how is it going?

"Well we are through right now. This is the second time in three years we didn't make the playoffs and that hurts not to be able to play in them on my senior year."

Do you have any other sports you play at Central?

"I play basketball and run track but I'm not playing basketball this year as I will be participating in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game that will be played on December 12th. After that I will workout until track where I run the 100, 200 and 4 x 100 events."

Dale's Take:

Orwin was very upbeat about his decision. He said several times that he was solid or locked to Georgia Tech. In fact Coach Johnson told Orwin to let him know if he would ever be considered a soft verbal and Orwin said that wouldn't be a worry. He is looking forward to getting to Atlanta and becoming a Yellow Jacket. As he said, Orwin is locked.
