Preview of the Cornell Big Red

The Jackets face the Big Red of Cornell on Wednesday at 7:00pm at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. Cornell (3-6) of the Ivy League is coming off a 69-50 victory at Army where sophomore small forward Grant Harrell led the way with 18 points.

Like Georgia Tech, Cornell has a lineup dominated by youth. Four of the five top scorers are either freshmen or sophomores. Sophomore Eric Taylor (6-8, 235) leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.2 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Second on the team in scoring is sophomore Cody Toppert. The 6-4 guard averages 13.8 ppg, but had a 27 point outburst against La Salle as well as going for 21 against the Big Red's stiffest competition thus far, Syracuse.

Freshman Lenny Collins (6-6, 205) has been a starter at forward the last three games, and is fourth on the team with 7 ppg. Another sophomore, Grant Harrell (6-6, 185), is fifth in scoring at 5.4 ppg. The lone upperclassman in the top five for Cornell is junior Ka'Ron Barnes (6-0, 190).

The lack of height amongst the Big Red players should allow the Jackets to have a decided edge in rebounding. So far this season the Big Red has been outrebounded by about 4 rebounds per game.

Like Georgia Tech, Cornell has had problems at the free throw line. For the year they are shooting at a 58.6% clip.

Cornell's three victories this year came over Buffalo, Ithaca College, and Army. Their fourth victory isn't likely to come on Wednesday, but stranger things have happened, and the Jackets have not been playing well lately. Top Stories
