DeAndre Smelter - Profile

How is recruiting coming along in football?

"It has been coming along very well. Georgia Tech is recruiting me hard right now. Coach Hall wants me up there and Coach Johnson does too. Coach Johnson has told me that he will allow me to play both sports if I came to Tech."

What other schools have been recruiting you?

"Well of course Tech has along with Stanford, Georgia, LSU, Maryland and Georgia Southern. All have offered and all have told me that I can play both sports if I choose them as my college choice."

Which schools would you say are recruiting you the hardest?

"Georgia Tech, Georgia and Stanford are the three schools that have really been recruiting me hard. I feel that these three will get my official visits in the fall as the summer will be busy with baseball workouts."

So, no football camps lined up?

"No sir, not right now. I know I will be in Minnesota from this Wednesday through next Monday for a National Baseball Showcase. With the help of my pitching instructor, Kevin Brown, I hope to make more baseball showcase events over the summer."

Do you have a top list of schools that you would consider them your leaders?

"No sir. I am pretty much open right now."

Have you given it much thought about what it would take for you forgo college and go into professional baseball?

"I really don't know what round or a particular team that I would say, 'hey I want to take the baseball route'. I need to sit down with my Mom and discuss the future and see what is in my best interest. All I know is it will be an honor to be drafted and I can't say that I have a team that I really want to draft me over the others."

Congratulations on winning your 2nd straight state championship in baseball. How does the future look for a third straight title?

"We lost a lot of seniors this year so it will be tough but I think Tattnall Square will be there come next year challenging once again for a state championship."

How about a title in football, does Tattnall look strong this season?

Yes sir, we do. It would be nice to add another title to our trophy case."

Dale's Take:

DeAndre will play both sports in college provided he doesn't go pro in baseball. He has the support of all the coaches in both sports for him to play if he chooses any of the schools recruiting him. Top Stories
