Why I Committed to GT - Part 2

GoJackets.com spoke with three members of Georgia Tech's 2010 recruiting class. All three tell how they came to choose the Yellow Jackets, providing a behind-the-scenes look at their recruitment. In Part 2 of this series, we spoke with one of GT's "biggest" 2010 commitments, DT Denzel McCoy.

Part 1 - Charles Perkins

Northview's Denzel McCoy had many offers and was thought to have his recruitment last well into his senior year. Denzel surprised everyone by making a commitment on April 4th, well before summer camps and his senior year of football. Denzel tells his story on what lead him to Tech.

At the time of your commitment to Georgia Tech, how many offers did you have?

"I had around 36 offers from all over the country."

When did Georgia Tech start recruiting you?

"I started hearing from Tech about the summer of my sophomore year. On the old staff under Coach Gailey, Coach Hunter and my Dad are very good friends as Coach Hunter coached my Dad in college football. It felt like a good fit whenever I was at Georgia Tech, which was a lot. Something that most people don't know is that I have seen every Georgia Tech home game since my freshman year of high school. Georgia Tech was like a home away from home for me."

Did the coaching change set Tech back any?

"Well, I had to start looking into it and see if there were any other schools that fit better for me. Plus, I started researching Coach Johnson and his staff. What I saw blew me away. He has been a winner wherever he's gone. What he did at Navy and Georgia Southern is absolutely incredible. I saw he was a winner, and thought I would love to be a part of his team. I took a few visits to Georgia Tech and a few to other schools. Though I will tell you one thing, keeping Coach [Giff] Smith was a huge plus in Tech's advantage."

What made you decide on Georgia Tech?

"I looked at every school that offered me. I went over everything and saw that Georgia Tech offered me the best of both football and academics. I want to major in Computer Science and play on a good winning football team and Tech had both. I just had a feeling that day in April and told Coach Johnson and his staff that my recruitment was over that I wanted to come to Georgia Tech. When I was at Georgia Tech, I saw awesome things from the campus, students, and coaching staff that I did not see at other schools. The current players treated us recruits with great respect and told us how great of a time they were having at Tech. I saw that the alumni really supported their school a lot and the fans were really behind the players no matter what. So I said why wait when I knew in my heart where I wanted to go. I seized the opportunity and have never looked back."

Was Georgia Tech your first offer?

"No sir, actually Alabama and Penn State were the first schools to offer. In the beginning it was hard to try and see if a school would move ahead of the others, but Tech started doing that and even continued after I got to know the new staff. I know I made the best decision for myself."

Have you been talking with other players to come in with you?

"Yes sir, I have. I spoke with Shawn Green just this week and talk with and Tyrone Cornileus about coming to Georgia Tech with me and Charles."
