Coach Wommack JSU Post-Game Comments

Coach Dave Wommack gives us his post game thoughts on the defensive line, the play of the linebackers and the play of two new players in Julian Burnett and Jerrard Tarrant following the opening win over Jacksonville State.

It seemed like the defense had there hands on some balls and missed chances for interceptions?

"Yeah we did. We had a couple of chances but we didn't get them. There's so much we can off to really make us better. We'll have to and we'll have to get a lot better to be successful next Thursday."

Was it nice to see Jerrard out there and to see what he could do?

"He has some real good quickness and change of direction. He had the punt return which obviously helped us. We have so much more confidence back there when he's the punt returner. His playing corner was a positive for us too."

How did he look at corner?

"I thought he did some really good things. He came up to me the other day and said coach you know I haven't played since 2006 and I said that I hadn't realized that. He's a lot like some of those other guys. They're young and they have some learning experiences to go through."

You've moved some guys around in the secondary. Do you feel you have them in the right spots?

I think we have the best eleven players on the field. I don't think there's any doubt about that. I'd just like to see our depth develop more. We played fewer reps with the ones because of the turn around. I'm not saying that as a negative. That was just plan A. We were able to cut some of their reps but we have a long ways to go.

Is it tough to get continuity moving a lot of guys in and out of the lineup?

"I don't think there's any doubt. You get into one of those things like Gardner Webb last year. You'd think first game of the season they'd all be flying around. You saw guys out there that weren't used to playing."

What did you think of the push up front?

I thought we did some good things. We played a lot of people we alternated a lot of people. Again, I don't want to take anything away from Jacksonville State but they're not anything like the next ten opponents we'll play."

Will this give you a better idea, with the amount of players you played, of who you can use in a tight game?

"I think it will when we go back and watch the tape. We played four different guys at 'husky' and 'wolf' and we were rolling in as many guys as we could. We were using the twos and threes in the last quarter. It's a good thing and it's a bad thing."

Are Reese and Reid still pretty close as to who you want to put out there?

"I think so for the most part. I think we'll feel confident with both those guys in there. I think we'll be in good shape."

How about the play of Julian?

"You could tell he was ready to play. I went up to him before the game and he was anxious and excited to get out there on the field. He's going to help this team. He's not a polished product by any sense of the imagination."

Will the double and triple teams on Morgan open up some opportunities for the others?

"Yeah, it should. I thought we stayed pretty basic in our game plan this week. We didn't run a lot of different things and we didn't show them a lot of what we had. That is a good thing for us. We have a lot of work to do.

The linebackers (Julian) led the team in tackles. Is that a positive?

"I don't have a problem with that. Last year the safeties led the team in tackles so this is a positive. Julian has been showing a lot in practice. He doesn't have it all down like the checks and the things he has to be able to do but man his motor runs and he's physical and instinctive. He's going to play more and more." Top Stories
