A.J. Johnson Names Early Leaders

Gainesville, Georgia junior middle linebacker A.J. Johnson has two schools at the top of his list as he begins the recruiting process. Although he says these two schools lead, A.J. said that this could change as he begins visiting schools and learning more about them.

What are you current measurables and position on the football team?

"I am 6' 3 ½" and weigh 232 pounds. I run a 4.7 forty. I play middle linebacker for Gainesville High School."

How has your season been so far?

"Right now we are 3-0 and have two shutouts in the first three games. Next week we play our biggest rival North Hall. That should be a great game. We get them at home and there is already talk of a lot of people showing up for the game. It should be a good one."

On the recruiting front, what schools are you hearing from?

"Right now I am hearing from Tennessee, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Alabama, Auburn, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and LSU. I have been getting some letters from Oregon to see how interested in them I am."

Would you have a top list of schools?

"Right now I have Tennessee as my top school with Clemson second. That isn't set in stone though as there is long way until my recruitment ends. I have a lot of visits to make and games to watch before I make a decision. A lot can and probably will change over the course of my recruitment."

What makes Tennessee you top right now?

"I like their defense and they have shown a lot of interest in me so far."

Do you have a preference as to where you play?

"I feel that the SEC is where I want to play but I like the way the ACC is coming on too. I can see my self in either conference or as far away as UCLA out on the west coast. It all depends on how I feel about that school and how my recruitment goes. Even though I have a top two, I feel I am wide open this early in my recruitment as it is along way to go and each visit I make can change a lot of things in my recruitment."

Have you been to any games this early in the college season?

"I went to the Georgia Tech/Clemson game this past Thursday night. It was a great game. Tech really jumped out to a big lead but Clemson came back. I thought Clemson was going to win but Tech showed they were tough and pulled out the victory. I really enjoyed the game a lot."

Do you have any games you are going to that you know you have set up?

"The only one I have set up right now is the Florida/Tennessee game this up coming Saturday. I will play it by ear for the rest of the season and see which ones I get invited to."

Of the two state schools, which one is recruiting you the hardest?

"Georgia Tech is really recruiting me hard. Georgia says they will start recruiting my more so towards my senior year so they can see how I play."

Is Georgia Tech a school you could see yourself going to?

"Yes sir I can. When I make my visits there, if I feel like I am at home, I could definitely see myself there."

I know it is early but what are you looking for in a school?

"I want to go to a good academic school that has a good football history as well. I want the school I choose be one that makes me feel like it is home to me while I am there. I just want to feel real comfortable there and like everything about it."

As a football player, what do you feel you do best?

"I feel I get the team hyped up and ready to play. Also I can get to the ball very fast and make the play."

What do you want to improve on before college?

"I want to improve my speed and improve on all the little things that make you a better player, the intangibles."

Dale's Take: AJ is a recruit that is going to enjoy the recruiting process. You could tell he had company with him but he took time out to do the interview and really enjoyed talking with me about his recruitment and how much he is looking forward to what it brings. He lists two early favorites but he hasn't really visited many places and he knows each visit can and most likely change his outlook on which teams he favors.
