Mfon Udofia: Its What I Expected

Mfon Udofia came to Georgia Tech as a highly touted point guard. Last Saturday night against Florida A&M Moo had his first chance to show everyone what he could do in a regular season game. Moo talked about the experience and what his expectations were coming into Tech.

How's it been going so far?

"I think it's been going good. It's what I expected. I knew it was going to be hard and intense. I knew it was going to be intense when I came in here."

How much did you expect to play?

"I expected to play right away. Coach (Paul) Hewitt told me to just work hard and you'll find your way into the lineup. I came in at the beginning of the season and really worked hard. I just continue to work."

Do you consider yourself and Iman (Shumpert) 1 and 1A?

"Yeah, we're interchangeable. Sometimes he can bring it up and sometimes I bring it up and he plays off the ball. I think it's good. He's still a point guard as well."

Is everyone in Miller Grove excited about the success that you and Stephen Hill have experienced so far?

"Everybody had good hopes and good plans for us when we came to Tech. So far it's been good. Stephen's been doing a good job on the football field and I commend him on that. I knew he was going to do that from jump because I know what kind of player he is. I'm trying to do the same thing on the basketball court."

Are you looking forward to the trip to Puerto Rico?

"Yes sir, it's a big trip for me and I just can't wait."

Are your teammates still learning the pace of your passes?

"Yeah, it's just timing and getting to know each other and stuff like that."

What are some of your strengths?

"Getting to the basket, defense, getting my teammates the ball, and my energy for the whole game."

Is pushing the ball suited to your style of play?

"It's going to fit in my game; pushing the ball and going up and down. That tempo goes right along with my game."

Coach likes to get the ball low to Derrick and Gani. How easy is it getting it down there?

"They're both good at catching the ball down low. With both of them down low, it's so hard for the defense to double both of them. It's easy for one on one with Derrick or one on one with Gani. We just try to get it into the post as much as possible. We're working on a higher percentage pass. Coach has on working on the bounce pass into the post."

Have you had a chance to take a look at Dayton's guards to see what you'll be going up against?

"I just know that they play really hard. They play on the ball pressure so I'm going to match their intensity and play as hard as they're going to play. Dayton is a really good team so it's going to be a test for us."

Was it a relief to have the win you had Saturday after having to go into overtime against IUP?

"It was sort of a relief but I felt IUP was just a step back. After that game everybody just came back down to earth and humbled themselves and played much harder." Top Stories
