North Gwinnett HS linebacker Brandon McGowan is very busy this spring with visiting schools and everything else that goes along with the beginning of the recruiting process. Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest were some of the schools Brandon was hearing from all the way back in the fall. Many other schools are taking notice now. "I've also started to get a lot of mail from schools like Connecticut, Ohio State, USC, Tennessee, and Alabama," he said.
McGowan doesn't have his first offer yet, but that should come some time this spring during or after spring practice when schools can get an even better feel for how he plays. He attended the Scout.com Showcase in Duluth a couple weeks ago and said he measured in at 6'2" 210 pounds, and that he was shocked by his weight. He said he is now closer to 220 pounds. He couldn't remember how he did in all the drills but did report a vertical jump of either 32.5 or 33.5 inches and a 4.5 shuttle time. He has attended only one Junior Day so far, to Georgia's with teammate and best friend C.J. Uzomah. He said it was a good visit to Athens, somewhere he was already familiar with. "C.J. and I went last year so there wasn't a lot of new information for us. But it was good to see the campus and talk with the coaches again."
Another school Brandon is familiar with is Georgia Tech, having visited there twice for the Yellow Jackets' games with Clemson and Virginia Tech last fall. He was then on Georgia Tech's campus last weekend with some other high profile recruits. This allowed him the opportunity to see some things close up and even meet with the new defensive coordinator, Al Groh.
"I talked with Coach Groh a little bit. We toured the locker room, weight room, and that kind of stuff. I liked it, it was really nice. I really liked Coach Groh. He's in it to win it! He really just wants to win and get a good defense going. You can tell that."
McGowan plans on going to Alabama for their Junior Day this Saturday, the 20th. The following weekend he will be attending Tennessee's Junior Day. He will also be trying to go to South Carolina, Auburn, and Vanderbilt in March.
Some of the schools recruiting Brandon, run a 3-4 defensive scheme, like Alabama, Georgia Tech, and Georgia. Is that more attractive to a linebacker? "Oh yeah, we run a 3-5 scheme at my high school so it's pretty much the same. I like it, definitely," he said.
In the past, McGowan talked of how education is most important. He really doesn't have much of a timetable; he just wants to get good looks at as many schools as he can. "I'm just enjoying the process right now," he said. "Hopefully by the end of this coming football season everything will be solid (in terms of where he's going)."
Brandon reports no leader or list of top schools. He's taking it all in, however he did say that he and the aforementioned quarterback Uzomah talk about playing at the same college in the future.
