Two Early Leaders for Philpott

Tyler Philpott is a big offensive lineman from Polk High School (NC) who made the trip down from North Carolina to visit in-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech. The 6'3", 275-pound Philpott named two schools as his early leaders.

Tyler Philpott feels that run blocking is the strongest part of his game. "I am very high on Georgia Tech because they run the ball a lot." Philpott plays left tackle for Polk County but most schools are recruiting him as a center or guard. Tyler also plays tackle on the defensive side of the ball.

Football isn't the only sport Tyler plays in high school. "I am the clean-up hitter and first baseman on the baseball team. "I thought about trying to play both in college but I feel if I went to a major school like Georgia Tech, I'd devote all my time to football." Philpott feels that playing both would be a possibility if he went to a smaller school.

Philpott started his busy day Saturday by attending Georgia Tech's scrimmage. "The scrimmage was very interesting and I liked what I saw," said Philpott. "I feel I can be an asset to their style of play." Tyler liked the set-up of the campus and the stadium. "I loved the fact that it is the oldest division one stadium but is a great looking stadium." Tech's academic standing also stood out to Philpott.

Tyler had a chance to talk to Coach (Todd) Spencer at the scrimmage. "He told me he liked my body build and that it was what they were looking for in their offensive linemen." Coach Spencer liked what he saw in Philpott's film and will be staying in contact with him. "He invited me back for the spring game on the 24th and I will be coming back for it."

Following his trip to Tech, Philpott made the short drive to Athens for Georgia's spring game. "There were a lot of people there supporting their team," said Tyler. "You could tell that football is big with their fans."

The two trips to the in-state Georgia schools are the first of more to come. "I'll be going to Georgia Tech's spring game on the 24th of course." Philpott also has plans to attend Michigan's elite camp on June 5th and the Shrine Bowl Combine. "I'd like to attend some games where the schools I like are playing each other like Georgia-Georgia Tech or Georgia Tech-North Carolina."

Philpott is currently hearing from Duke, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Wake Forest. "They are the ones that seem to be recruiting me the hardest right now." Georgia Tech and Michigan are the two that Philpott favors right now. "My family is from Michigan and my father went there but I like Georgia Tech a lot because of their academics. "I want to major in education or engineering and both schools are very strong academically."

It's easy to see that academics will be a major factor in the selection process for Philpott as are how he feels on campus and he relationship with the coaches. "Location isn't a big factor, but I will say that Michigan is about the farthest I would go away from home." Philpott will most likely make his decision in the early part of his senior season. "I don't see myself waiting for signing day or even close to that to make a decision." Top Stories
