David Helton, a 6'4"-224 linebacker from Chattanooga, Tennessee showed the Tech coaches that he looked just as good in person as he did on film. "The coaches told me I performed well," said Helton. "Coach (Paul) Johnson told me I was exactly what they were looking for at the middle linebacker position." The coaches were impressed with Helton's lateral movement and flexibility.
David received his offer as he was leaving camp. "Coach Johnson and Coach (Al) Groh told me that really wanted me at Georgia Tech and thought I would be an excellent addition to their linebacking position."
Helton had eight offers prior to the camp with Georgia Tech being his ninth offer. " I have offers from Georgia Tech, Duke, Middle Tennessee, Syracuse, Memphis, Air Force, Tennessee Chattanooga, and Western Kentucky."
The offer has made Tech one of his favorites. "I like Georgia Tech a lot," said Helton. "I also like Duke but Georgia Tech really stood out today." Helton had a chance to see Tech's locker room and training room and liked what he saw.
Today's trip to Atlanta today won't be the only one to Georgia Tech this month. "I liked it so much that I am coming back either Monday or Wednesday to tour the whole campus." Like many other recruits before him, Helton was impressed with how the campus is set in downtown Atlanta but doesn't look like it is in a major city. "I want a chance to see the whole school, the dorms, the weight room, everything."
Helton has plans to make his decision in the middle of July or mid-August. "l will know what school I'll choose before I go back to school." His education will be the most important factor for Helton. "I want a good academic school." Football tradition is also important to him and he wants a school where he'll feel comfortable. "I want a good fan base that really supports their school," said Helton. "I've heard Yellow Jacket Alley is great and that Bobby Dodd Stadium is very loud."
