They call him "Big Purp". Most people know him as Lorenzo Mauldin, a 6-4, 240 pound, Class of 2011, defensive end, from Atlanta's Maynard Jackson High School. He was recently on the Tech campus for a pair of camps and shared his experience and updated is recruitment.
Mauldin's first trip to Georgia Tech's campus this past week was for the Offensive/Defensive lineman camp. He followed that up by attending the one day Junior-Senior Camp.
Lorenzo got to experience some things that he had yet to experience with his high school team. "The coaches worked on technique, finesse, and stances and a lot of that was new to me," said Mauldin. "We also did some one on one and I worked with Coach (Al) Groh and Coach (Andy) McCollum."
Mauldin also had a chance to chat with Coach (Paul) Johnson. "He said that I gave a good effort." Lorenzo left the camp without an offer from Tech. "I have offers from Kentucky, South Carolina, Troy, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, and a new offer from Marshall."
Two of those schools are paying Mauldin more attention than others. "I hear more from Kentucky and South Carolina and I have visits planned there soon and I'm also going to summer camps at each school."
Lorenzo plans on waiting to see what offers he gets before making a decision. "I will pick a school based on academics and then their football program." Mauldin currently has a 3.1 GPA. "I hope to make a decision midway through my senior season."
Mauldin came about his nickname because his taste in clothes. "I like to wear a lot of purple so my buddies shortened it and they call me "Big Purp"."
