William Goodwin may not sound like an imposing name for a basketball player, but there's more to the story on this Southwest DeKalb (GA) High School power forward, who was named MVP at the well regarded Tournament of Champions played at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill earlier this summer.
The 6'8"-230 Goodwin is known to his teammates as Shaq. "When I was born, my mom and dad agreed that if I was under twenty inches I would have my dad's name as my middle name and if I was bigger it would be Shaquille." Goodwin was twenty one inches at birth so Shaquille became his middle name and his teammates now call him Shaq.
Goodwin is listed with the class of 2012 but that may be changing. "I'm really young for my grad and I'm thinking about dropping back to the class of 2013." He would still only have two years of high school eligibility left if he were to do that.
Because of his size, Goodwin has received offers in both basketball and football. "I've received both and I want to play both in college." Georgia Tech is one of the schools that may be looking at him for both. "I don't have offers from them in either sport but in their recruiting, they say they're fine with that." Goodwin has been talking to Georgia Tech Coach Darryl LaBarrie.
Goodwin currently has five basketball offers. "Alabama, Florida State, Providence, and Miami have offered." He also has a large number of schools in addition to Georgia Tech that are showing him interest. "Oklahoma, Auburn, Florida, Oregon, Xavier, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, and Massachusetts have all contacted me." To date, Goodwin has only taken an unofficial to Georgia.
