Chaz Cheeks and his teammates are getting ready for the 2010 season. "We're working hard and getting ready to make a run at the state title. Cheeks expects this year's team to be better than last season and is expecting this to be a very good team. "We want to make the playoffs and make a run at the state title which would be a great way to go out before heading to Georgia Tech."
Chaz made his commit to Georgia Tech on March 16th and let everyone know that he is firmly committed. "Tennessee has sent me some stuff but if I talk to any of the coaches I tell them thanks but no thanks," said Cheeks. "I am firmly committed to Georgia Tech and I guess the word has gotten around and it is now quiet on the recruiting front."
Even though he is a firm commit, Cheeks still hears from the coaches quite often. "When they can call, they do and I get mail from them and I stay in contact with them." Cheeks was recruited to Tech by Coach Todd Spencer. "Coach Spencer was my recruiting coach but now that Coach (Andy) McCollum is there he is my recruiting coach," said Cheeks. "We've talked a lot and he's a guy I can relate to very well."
Cheeks has also built a relationship with linebacker Coach Joe Speed. "He's looking for me to come in as an outside linebacker but we talked about moving inside if my body changes." Cheeks will start on the outside and that suits him just fine as he prefers that position to the middle. "I can't wait to get to Georgia Tech and get started."
Now that he has given Tech his verbal, Cheeks has been busy trying to help them recruit. "I talk to A.J. Johnson a lot and we hang out and are good friends despite playing on rival teams." Cheeks and Johnson talked a lot over the summer and Johnson told Cheeks his top five. "He recently told me that Georgia Tech is one of the schools he is seriously considering and that they are in his top five." Cheeks will continue to work hard on getting Johnson to come to Georgia Tech with him.
Cheeks will not be a stranger to Bobby Dodd Stadium this season. "I plan on going to as many games as I can and I'm looking forward to seeing my future teammates in action."
