HOOPS: 7-foot defensive stopper eyes WSU

ONE OF THE recent official visitors to Washington State was a 7-footer whose assets include his strength and high ceiling. From the same school as Cougar Faisal Aden, he holds a Wazzu offer and his upside becomes even more apparent with the knowledge he's still very new to the game. He's also been known to play a particularly strong brand of defense.

John Florveus (7-0, 215) out of Hillsborough CC in Tampa, Florida lights up when the topic of his official trip to Washington State is mentioned.

"Oh, it was wonderful," said Florveus. "It's a college town…everything revolves around the college. They have huge support, great facilities, great coaching, there's a lot of things. And they're in the Pac-10."

Florveus isn't ready to make his decision just yet, though. He was scheduled to visit Marshall this past weekend and had previous been to UTEP.

"I want to sign in the early period for sure, but don't know exactly when that will be," said Florveous.

The early signing period runs from Nov. 10-17, while the late signing period in hoops is April 13 - May 18, 2011.

FLORVEUS WAS A role player primarily for Hillsborough last season as a freshman. But he isn't the same player he was coming out of high school – he's grown into his body, which has shown in his athleticism, and he's gotten considerably stronger.

Still, he's only been playing the game since his junior year in high school, and by any measure he's raw. But it also means his ceiling is a high one, which has increased his stock on the recruiting trail.

"I'm really hearing from all the schools that I have a lot of potential. They say I have great movement and they feel I'm a defensive specialist, I guess. They like that I'm a defensive presence down low, and I just need to work on my offensive game. And I can run. Yes, I can run," said Florveus.

In addition to Washington State, his offers include Marshall, UTEP, Hawaii, Georgia, Duquesne, Iowa State and Canisius.
