The All Encompassing Network

ATHENS – There are numerous ways a college student can get in trouble or embarrass themselves.

In a way, college is a time where embarrassing behavior is somewhat acceptable. But social networking is changing the way outrageous activities are documented.

There are over 500 million users on Facebook, where users create profiles, add photos, list interests and join groups. Users spend over 700 billion minutes per month on the social networking phenomenon. And over half of comScore's Global Top 100 websites have integrated with Facebook.

So, as the old peer pressure line goes, "Everybody is doing it," including University of Georgia athletes.

Of the 107 football players in the, "Official Game Program," sold last Saturday, 97 have a Facebook account.

The most logical question gleaned from that figure: What rock have the other 10 been logging on under?

There are also former players, like Demetre Baker, Zach Mettenberger and Neland Ball with active pages. Senior Akeem Dent doesn't have a profile, but there is a group devoted to him called, "Akeem Dent is the best Linebacker in the Country."

Junior linebacker Marcus Dowtin was almost marked down as a non-user, but he's listed his name as "Rick Flair."

Although the correct spelling of the "Nature Boy's" name is Ric, these kids are tricky.

"I like being able to stay in contact with people because it's a lot easier than having to keep everybody's phone number and stuff like that," junior tight end Aron White said.

No doubt, Facebook is an extremely useful and valuable tool. Keeping up with old and new friends and family is important for players like White, who is from Missouri. Using social networking sites is, at times, more convenient for people in different time zones on hectic schedules. Plus, the site offers college students an outlet to be funny and carry on conversations that might not normally be had.

"Yeah I get a lot of comments on my wall and messages from people back home, whether it be teachers or some of my parents friends," White said. "They may send me something about the game, or even my friends from high school. It's a good to stay in contact with people. It's a good tool, but you know it's dangerous."

That's an accurate summary of Facebook for college athletes.

Yes, the site is useful. But for a young man or woman in the spotlight, there is a dangerous side.

"You just know as a person and as a player in high regard, you know what to put on there and what to say," said cornerback Brandon Boykin. "You can't draw a lot of attention to yourself and even pictures and things like that. Really if you're going to have (an account) you need to keep it private to a certain extent. That's what I try to do."

What Boykin speaks to is a simple and quick fix. Don't cuss or say inappropriate things in status updates, he said. Don't post pictures at parties. Don't refer to inside jokes that others can misconstrue.

Yes, these kids are still in college and should be allowed to have fun. But that fun can't spill over to a profile where fans and kids can view what is going on.

"Yeah, (I keep my profile clean) because my mom is on there and things like that," said linebacker Christian Robinson. "I don't want her or any of my family members to think I might feel a certain way that might be different than how I am or how I want to be portrayed. I do have a lot of kids who went to my high school who are a lot younger. We went to a K-through-12 private school and they look at that. The person that I am and the person that I've grown up and been raised to be, I don't want that to look different."

A.J. Green is proof of Facebook's terrible side.

The illegal sale of the junior wide receiver's Independence Bowl jersey was initiated through Facebook. Despite security efforts to block random people from viewing a profile until granted permission, usually a message can still be sent by anybody to a particular person. Facebook makes the world smaller, and presents another way players can be tripped up.

"We get messages all the time from people saying they're big fans and you know fan mail all the time," Boykin said. "But as far as somebody wanting me to sell something to them or get something from me, I mean, you just got to really ignore that if you do get something like that. I'm sure players have had that happen to them with people being known and the social networks. So you just have to know when and when not to respond to people."

Most of the time, players get messages and remarks from fans simply trying to give a quick shoutout. Sometimes these comments can turn negative. A few players said they received negative messages during the Bulldogs' four-game skid. After all, punter Drew Butler has 3,927 "friends," most of which he doesn't even know by face or name.

"No, actually you don't even know most of them, you just kind of keep in touch with your closer friends and people you mainly talk to," Butler said.

Most of Georgia's current players didn't create an account until they got to college. But the site, like a fashion or music trend, has seeped into the high school ranks. Georgia commits such as David Andrews, Watts Dantzler and Justin Scott-Wesley have been on the site for years.

And when high-profile athletes start logging on, you know who is next to follow: college coaches looking for an edge in recruiting.

"I'm not even going to lie, I was on Facebook and I thought I saw, I don't know if it was real, but another school's head coach had a Facebook," Boykin said. "I was like, ‘Is that real?' That's kind of weird, you know what I'm saying? To be on Facebook and a coach recruiting you through Facebook, but I mean times are changing. Technology is pretty much taking over. I wouldn't past anybody. It's just crazy to see how recruiting is getting."

Scott-Wesley can answer Boykin's question about authenticity. It may be weird for college kids to see grown men stalking recruits, but it's happening. And Georgia is right in the thick of the Facebook recruiting march.

"Yeah (Georgia offensive coordinator Mike) Bobo talks to me on there," Scott-Wesley said. "I actually sent him a message this morning. I have a lot of coaches that talk to me on Facebook. When I looked at it, I thought it was something illegal. But when I looked into it, it's another form of email. It's someone just trying to get the upper hand."

Now Facebook is changing the way recruiting is conducted. Text messages to cell phones are not permitted. But a message sent via Facebook can be accessed by an iPhone or Blackberry. Facebook is a crafty exception to the rule

Once again, a useful tool with dangerous implications because of a seemingly lack of limitations. Refer to the slogan advertised with the recently released film, "The Social Network." The movie is about the founding of Facebook with a tagline that reads: "You Don't Get to 500 Million Friends Without Making a Few Enemies". Seems like an ominous phrase.

The film, released October 1, quickly ascended to No. 1 at the box office, grossing over $23 million during its weekend debut. So, the success of Facebook is all over the map, from the box office to recruiting efforts, and its dangers are well documented. Georgia's Athletic Association is doing the best it can to educate student-athletes on the proper way to conduct activity on the web.

"I mean they always, even before the A.J. situation, preached about Facebook," safety Bacarri Rambo said. "It's a social thing where you might be trying to get a job later on in your life and you might have pictures at a bar with drinks in your hand. That will affect your future. They tell us to watch out for your Facebook and your Twitter and all that stuff. It can hurt you in the long run. It may be cool right now, but it can hurt you in the long run."

Once or twice a year, players must attend sessions where tips are given about social networking. But no matter what the players know and use to prevent bad situations, the pitfalls are many and sometimes out of a person's control.

"These days everybody has a picture phone and a camera phone," White said. "They can upload it right there. I could go and do something I might not be proud of and 10 seconds later, go on my wall and I'm tagged in some crazy video. It's just a dangerous thing. I try to manage it the best I can."

You know, maybe those 10 football players who haven't joined the site were right to stay away and are better off.
