The Dawg Post Mail Bag

ATHENS - Finally, another installment of Fletcher Page's news, notes and extremely useful thoughts and tidbits.

Finally, the most exciting part of the Dawg Post week. And I say that half-heartedly.

Let's get it poppin'.

theburnem emails: I understand this is just about a dead horse but we will continue to beat it until February. How do you feel that Crowell is really feeling about our struggles this year. On one hand you could make a case that he wants to goto Bama and win for sure or be buried in a depth chart there. Uga's struggles could offer immediate playing time for a stud such as Crowell. How do you feel going forward with him? At one point I had my mind set that he was possibly a silent commit.

I don't think he has ever been a silent commit. He has certainly been a lean in the past. I don't want to put words in anybody's mouth, but this may be a heart/mind battle. I think any running back that is offered by Alabama needs to take a long look there. The Crimson Tide has it going on right now over there. And they've shown they will play multiple backs, and their line isn't slowing down any time soon.

With that said, I think Crowell grew up liking Georgia. And he would be able to come in and make a difference. And the Jarvis Jones influence is in full effect. The early struggles hurt badly, but Richt has shown he can rebound. Potential wins over Florida, Georgia Tech and Auburn are looming. Those will be big.

dunkaroos8 emails: me and my buddies were arguing today who had the highest vertical between aj green, brandon boykin, and travis leslie? I know it might be a wierd question but after a few brewskies, It turned into a pretty heated argument.I personally cant think of anyone who can jump like travis leslie. His dunk on Demarcus Cousins was the craziest thing I have ever seen. I know both AJ and Boykin are ballers and can handle themselves on the court also, so I just thought I would ask. Who would you take?

This is quite simple, really. Travis Leslie is best leaper on campus. Dude is a mugjanker. And I mean that as a compliment. The real question is, who has the best ups between Boykin and Green? I think Boykin has him beat. Not only do I think that, but also a couple players on the team (who would not go on the record) said Boykin had the best vert on the team. A.J. has about six inches on him, so he can get up higher, but pound-for-pound, inch-for-inch, it's Boykin.

But Sir Leslie would posterize them all. My spellcheck says I need to change posterize to pasteurize. I guess he would do that, too.

Boykin thinks he could play ball in the SEC. So does A.J., by the way. I asked them both back during fall camp.

"Honestly, in high school I was a guy who could dunk all of the time," Boykin said. "In college I would have had to develop a jump shot if I wanted to be a prime time player."

And A.J.: "I don't know if I could do it. That's rough man. The time; staying stronger; staying in shape for both sports. Basketball is something different than football in terms of conditioning. I don't know. I think I could do it if I really wanted to play basketball, but I really didn't want to do that."

And I'll give the nod to dunkaroos8 for the question of the week. Your autographed Darryl Dawkins backboard should be in the mail soon. Insurance if broken or shattered is not included.

And also: what's the deal with AJ Harmon? I thought he would be a beast when he signed with us but has looked like a bust so far. Is it because of injury or is he just not earning playing time still? The man is huge he definitely looks the part of an SEC lineman. Gates must be the real deal then.

Gates is good. He's got great footwork. As with Harmon, my answer is usually (as you'll see later with Brown, Marlon) the same. It's his performance in practice, or his lack of knowledge and understanding. Or both. Probably both. I just don't think he knows what he needs to know yet. He'd make one hell of a nose guard, too. Will he get it together on the offensive side of the ball? I don't know. But he has the body to dominate if he ever does.

MagicMan31 asks: With our offense breaking out the past couple of games and vastly improving overall since AJ's return, do you think the Bobo detractors have lost some traction? Or, do you think they will continue to hate just to hate?

Oh, they'll hate. And if they can't hate on Bobo they'll hate on something else. Let's face it, A.J. is the biggest part of the offensive game plan. And for a full offseason (really two-plus years) Bobo danced with visions of conjuring up plays for A.J. in his head. They worked all fall camp, centering things around A.J.'s sticky hands and freakish speed. And then he's gone.

But the hate never disappears, Magic. It's always just below the surface. And it's only an incompletion on third down in the first quarter away from rearing its ugly head.

scottugafan asks: How are T.J.'s spirits in handling his injury so far? Can he be the next Justin Houston once he bulks up some?

I'm not sure on T.J. I know it was tough for him. I was on the sideline at Colorado when he took that hit. It was pretty gruesome. He seems to be a different player than Houston. He's obviously more finesse, but he is quicker. I guess that comes with the territory. It really doesn't matter, because I bet you're talking strictly in a sense of production…and T.J. could get there. His frame is perfect for filling out. I hate that the injury cost him some time, and I hope he is granted a medical redshirt for his trouble.

Also suggests: You and Dean should grow out your facial hair with the team and see who can grow the best beard.

Well Dean would woodshed me in that kind of competition. I'm fairly certain there are women who can grow better beards than I can. But I'm OK with that because they're circus sideshow attractions, those brutes.

Also: What's your prediction on the Kentucky game?

I think Georgia will win by more than two scores. Without Derrick Locke, I think Kentucky will have some trouble.

SuwaneeDawg03 asks: 1. What is making the offensive line come together better? Is it simply putting Gates in the lineup and sitting Davis? (This is awful reminiscent of last season)

Gates and Trinton Sturdivant's increased role has made a difference. I think Clint Boling has done well over on the right side, and now Cordy Glenn looks the best he has since the bout with mono. I got mono my freshman year in college during finals. My mono cost me a full letter grade in one class. Glenn's cost him just as dearly (sorta). I'm not saying he looked like Tim Richmond, but he wasn't 100 percent, either.

The line is far from as physical as they want to be. Mike Bobo told me so. But they have done work the past two weeks. I think this Kentucky game would go a long way in proving they're capable, because the Wildcats have a pretty solid front seven.

2. Our D has really come on the last two weeks? Is it because they are really getting the system down or the competition just blew or a combo deal?

Combo deal. I guess the comprehension would be the pretzel, and the weaker opponents would be the cheese. Cause if you're eating another variety of Combo's, you picked the wrong bag, homie.

Seriously, I think comprehension and understanding is a big part of this. I expected the defense to hit its stride right about this time on the schedule, but I didn't think there would be four losses coming beforehand. These things take time. Remember Alabama was 6-6 in 2007. Just saying. Actually, I'm repeating what Todd Grantham said. He's just saying.

3. Do we land Dai-jon Parker or any other b-ball recruits before the early signing period?

Everything I had heard this fall led me to believe Dai-Jon would be going out-of-state. The kid has racked up one crazy offer sheet. He has offers to Rhode Island, Oregon State, Oklahoma State and everywhere in between it seems. He really enjoyed his visit to Oklahoma State, because they have some of the best facilities T. Boone Pickens' money can buy.

But it appears his biggest selling point is playing time. He wants to make an impact immediately. And his mother likes the way Mark Fox and staff have recruited her son, according to one of my trusted sources. Fox has been by the book, by the rules and very respectful, which has impressed Dai-Jon's mother.

Still, there are two weeks to go. Vanderbilt seems to be tough competition, as does Oklahoma State and others. We soon shall see.

4. Do we have a better shot at beating Kentucky in football or basketball (yes I know we have 2 shots in basketball)?

I'm still going to say football. I think the basketball team is ready to take another step, but I'm not ready to say they'll beat Kentucky yet. I'm not saying they won't, either. But Kentucky without Locke, and Georgia playing still with a chance at the East coming off two big home wins and looking for momentum heading into the Florida week? I like those chances.

BlackDeathD asks: Here is a non-S&C question for once. Is Murray on pace to go into next year as the best QB in the SEC?

Well…wait, I'll let you finish.

or does Cam Newton have that locked up(unless he bolts for the NFL)?

Well….OK, go on.

Certainly Murray is better than Brantley?

Well…I think….

Certainly he is a better Offensive weapon than the whole Vandy and UT Offense put together?

Well, he definitely…

Does Murray attract a big time 2012 WR?

I think…

If I asked too many questions just take which ever one you want.

Haha, I'm just messing with you BlackDeathD. I remember those who have given me the platform in the past. I take care of my valued customers….or whatever you guys are.

I think Aaron is in place to be the best "quarterback." I kind of have Cam Newton in the "Tebow Realm." I'm not knocking that realm, but I think you guys know what I'm saying. Cam is certainly the better "football player" right now. But he's older and been around the football block a time or two. By the time Aaron reaches the point Cam currently is, I think he'll be just as good if not better. The key is, both are in systems that seem to favor their strengths. Aaron is definitely a pass-first guy who can kill you with his legs. Cam is definitely a run-first guy who can kill you with his arm, too.

But I give next year's edge to Cam. But when Aaron is Cam's current age, I expect a little dash of greatness.

C.J. Curry is already a committed wideout in the 2012 class. He is pretty damn good. I think the receiver recruiting will go just about how it always does, though. There may be a gem or stud who comes, but then again, there may not be. It's tough here in Georgia to always find "for sure" playmakers here.

By the way, is it wrong that I find it ironic when I type Cam Newton's name on my laptop. Is it? Really? Just checking. I know, I know, those charges were dropped. Whatever.

tdperk asks: What is the relationship like between coach Richt and coach Grantham? I haven't been to any games but have watched all of them on TV. I have seen the two of them in what appears to be heated discussions a few times. Maybe I am wrong and they were just in the heat of the battle. Fletcher, can you shed some light on how things are working out between the two of them.

I, too, have noticed these heated moments you speak of. And I like it. I like a little fire down on the sideline. Not enough to create dissention…but just enough to want to punch somebody in the nose.

I can't get close enough to hear if Grantham and Richt call each other names…so I've invited a tackling machine to enter the Mail Bag. Ladies and gentleman, give a welcome to Akeem Dent, the fourth-leading tackler in the SEC. That's right, 8.9 tackles a game.

"I mean, all the coaches around here have a good relationship," Dent said. "You know, when we're on the sideline and things like that, everyone is intense and in tune with what is going on. It's nothing like negative or anything like that going on between coach Richt and coach Grantham. It's probably just an adjustment or a call that coach Richt might want for us to do. It's always positive, no negative energy between coaches and players. It's always good."

Well, there you have it, although I wouldn't have expected to hear anything else. I tried to work it out of him, but I guess Richt and Grantham really do like each other.

moose1517 asks: Fletcher, Is Branden Smith likely out for the rest of the season? Do you think the coaches will try to play him if we start to make a run at the title game, or will they play it safe considering he had concussions in back to back weeks?

I'm not ready to say he'll be out for the rest of the year. I think he is on a more week-to-week basis. But there is no rush. And there shouldn't be. Obviously head injuries are all the rage on just about every level of football right now. And by rage, I meant talking point.

What this injury has done is to create an opportunity that Sanders Commings has taken full advantage of. Kid is big, physical and makes plays on the ball. He's done well in Smith's absence, which has eased the loss.

scottugafan asks: Would it be reasonable for us to hope Thompson and Leslie can lead their team on the hardcourt towards the level of success that Poythress and Beckham did in their last season together on the baseball diamond?

Yes. Those two make for a nice one-two punch. I think Thompkins is ready to lead and be that guy down the stretch who commands the ball and wants to finish out games. I think Travis has worked hard on his handle and his defense. These two testing the NBA waters for a few shallow moments (get it) benefited these guys, because they learned more explicitly what they needed to focus on in developing their game…if only they had a third wheel who could spot up and also create on his own. Oh well.

Wait…what's this I hear about Gerald Robinson Jr.? Oh, he can spot up for three. And penetrate? And he's fast and can distribute. Hmmmmm….

Busbozo asks: Will we have somebody spy Cam Newton - say Alec Ogletree for example?

That's a scary thought…..maybe for next year. I don't think Ogletree is quite ready for that. But he's got the athleticism for it, I suppose. I'm thinking more along the lines of Akeem Dent, possibly. Watch and see what Georgia does against Randall Cobb or Florida's frosh QB to see what they'll do.

And like you said: "It's not 10 guys that get the job done. You have to have all 11." Rennie Curran.

jtanner7 asks: If you had to make a guess, who do you think will play for the SEC Championship; both East and West?

I have no faith in South Carolina. I never have. And I never will. And why should I? They're perennial underachievers and always wilt down the stretch. But since they still control their own destiny, I'm going to keep them in as the winners of the East. But I'm saying this knowing they will blow this chance.

And I like what is going on out in the West. Alabama, LSU and Auburn all seem to be good candidates here. The winner of this weekend's Auburn/LSU matchup should have the best chance to knock Alabama off the Western throne. Those two teams are enticing, but I'm sticking with the champ. As coach Red Beaulieu said in the Waterboy, "Don't mess with the champ."

I'll take South Carolina and Alabama…but don't take your life savings to Vegas on my word.

Also:Why do the coaches not play Marlon Brown that often? I know he has been hurt here and there, but if you want the kid to be a great receiver, they need to play him more and throw to him more. He has been pretty darn solid so far. . . So next part of question is, do you think he will be our go-to receiver next year, along with King?

I would be worried about who is going to be the "go-to" receiver next year. For all of you "glass-half-full" readers, maybe A.J. will be. I don't think so. Of the current crop, I say Tavarres King will have to be.

To answer questions on any player concerning why they don't get more run, I tend to go the same answering route…They're not performing in practice. Or they're not fully grasping the playbook or what they need to do. Or both. And both. Probably both. With Marlon, I think he has a few formations and plays down pat, and that's when we see the kid out there. He is a good blocker and he relishes contact. But I don't think they're ready to cut him loose yet. Maybe by next year, he'll be in the "Bobo comfort zone." Maybe.

Why are the coaches throwing Josh Davis back into the line-up. I swear if you look at our past games, there are a lot of times where he just stands there if he has no one to block. I'm just not impressed with him, You?

Josh has struggled a little bit. And they've made the adjustments in the starting lineup to make up for these deficiencies. But I don't think Gates is ready for a full game's load of work. And I don't think Sturdivant's knee is either. I think Davis is a solid backup option, but he has whiffed on a few costly occasions.

Also: What would be your top thing to do on your Bucket List?!

My bucket list is long and always growing….I've got a lot of things I want to squeeze in during this short life of ours. Remind me to go into greater detail in the future. My friends and I have compiled a list of a few hundred interesting things we're going to do before we die…or in other words, before we all get married.

But I think No. 1 on my list is there for good, sound reasons (and this is my No. 1 sports item to check off the list).

I'd like to go to Daytona for the complete duration of Speed Weeks in February. And I'd like to take my Dad, to tag along on an all-expense paid trip, free-of-charge for him. I'd foot the bill just as a token of my appreciation for taking me along to many, many sporting events since the age of three or so. I was probably an annoying little dude, at times.

But yeah, I'd like to go for the whole shebang. If Dean would give me some vaca time (and he would), I'd like to hit up as many practice and qualifying sessions as humanly possible. I'm talking trucks, Nationwide, and Cup. And the 24 hours of Daytona. I want to see the qualifying races on Thursday and every race thereafter. I want the 500 to feel like a going-away party. I don't want to halfway do it. I mean, I've woken up on a Sunday morning and driven to Talladega and back the same day, but it's not the same as getting to the speedway about Thursday with no foreseeable shower in sight.

But yeah, money would be tight here, and you'd be about raced out when all was said and done. But I think it would be worth it.

I'll reveal more bucket list items as these mail bags continue.

I'd settle for the Super Bowl or Final Four, too. Just so you know.

>>> Turn the lights out boys…the party's over.

\r\n\"I mean, all the coaches around here have a good relationship,\" Dent said. \"You know, when we're on the sideline and things like that, everyone is intense and in tune with what is going on. It's nothing like negative or anything like that going on between coach Richt and coach Grantham. It's probably just an adjustment or a call that coach Richt might want for us to do. It's always positive, no negative energy between coaches and players. It's always good.\"\r\n

\r\nWell, there you have it, although I wouldn't have expected to hear anything else. I tried to work it out of him, but I guess Richt and Grantham really do like each other. \r\n

\r\nmoose1517 asks: Fletcher, Is Branden Smith likely out for the rest of the season? Do you think the coaches will try to play him if we start to make a run at the title game, or will they play it safe considering he had concussions in back to back weeks?\r\n

\r\nI'm not ready to say he'll be out for the rest of the year. I think he is on a more week-to-week basis. But there is no rush. And there shouldn't be. Obviously head injuries are all the rage on just about every level of football right now. And by rage, I meant talking point.\r\n

\r\nWhat this injury has done is to create an opportunity that Sanders Commings has taken full advantage of. Kid is big, physical and makes plays on the ball. He's done well in Smith's absence, which has eased the loss. \r\n

\r\nscottugafan asks: Would it be reasonable for us to hope Thompson and Leslie can lead their team on the hardcourt towards the level of success that Poythress and Beckham did in their last season together on the baseball diamond?\r\n

\r\nYes. Oh well. \r\n

\r\nWait…what's this I hear about Gerald Robinson Jr.? Oh, he can spot up for three. And penetrate? And he's fast and can distribute. Hmmmmm….\r\n

\r\nBusbozo asks: Will we have somebody spy Cam Newton - say Alec Ogletree for example?\r\n

\r\nThat's a scary thought…..maybe for next year. I don't think Ogletree is quite ready for that. But he's got the athleticism for it, I suppose. I'm thinking more along the lines of Akeem Dent, possibly. Watch and see what Georgia does against Randall Cobb or Florida's frosh QB to see what they'll do. \r\n

\r\nAnd like you said: \"It's not 10 guys that get the job done. You have to have all 11.\" Rennie Curran.\r\n

\r\njtanner7 asks: If you had to make a guess, who do you think will play for the SEC Championship; both East and West?\r\n

\r\nI have no faith in South Carolina. I never have. And I never will. And why should I? They're perennial underachievers and always wilt down the stretch. But since they still control their own destiny, I'm going to keep them in as the winners of the East. But I'm saying this knowing they will blow this chance. \r\n

\r\nAnd I like what is going on out in the West. Alabama, LSU and Auburn all seem to be good candidates here. The winner of this weekend's Auburn/LSU matchup should have the best chance to knock Alabama off the Western throne. Those two teams are enticing, but I'm sticking with the champ. As coach Red Beaulieu said in the Waterboy, \"Don't mess with the champ.\" \r\n

\r\nI'll take South Carolina and Alabama…but don't take your life savings to Vegas on my word. \r\n

\r\nAlso:Why do the coaches not play Marlon Brown that often? I know he has been hurt here and there, but if you want the kid to be a great receiver, they need to play him more and throw to him more. He has been pretty darn solid so far. . . So next part of question is, do you think he will be our go-to receiver next year, along with King? \r\n

\r\nI would be worried about who is going to be the \"go-to\" receiver next year. For all of you \"glass-half-full\" readers, maybe A.J. will be. I don't think so. Of the current crop, I say Tavarres King will have to be. \r\n

\r\nTo answer questions on any player concerning why they don't get more run, I tend to go the same answering route…They're not performing in practice. Maybe by next year, he'll be in the \"Bobo comfort zone.\" Maybe. \r\n

\r\nWhy are the coaches throwing Josh Davis back into the line-up. I swear if you look at our past games, there are a lot of times where he just stands there if he has no one to block. I'm just not impressed with him, You?\r\n

\r\nJosh has struggled a little bit. And they've made the adjustments in the starting lineup to make up for these deficiencies. But I don't think Gates is ready for a full game's load of work. And I don't think Sturdivant's knee is either. I think Davis is a solid backup option, but he has whiffed on a few costly occasions. \r\n

\r\nAlso: What would be your top thing to do on your Bucket List?!\r\n

\r\nMy bucket list is long and always growing….I've got a lot of things I want to squeeze in during this short life of ours. Remind me to go into greater detail in the future. My friends and I have compiled a list of a few hundred interesting things we're going to do before we die…or in other words, before we all get married. \r\n

\r\nBut I think No. 1 on my list is there for good, sound reasons (and this is my No. 1 sports item to check off the list). \r\n

\r\nI'd like to go to Daytona for the complete duration of Speed Weeks in February. And I'd like to take my Dad, to tag along on an all-expense paid trip, free-of-charge for him. I'd foot the bill just as a token of my appreciation for taking me along to many, many sporting events since the age of three or so. I was probably an annoying little dude, at times. \r\n

\r\nBut yeah, I'd like to go for the whole shebang. \r\n

\r\nBut yeah, money would be tight here, and you'd be about raced out when all was said and done. But I think it would be worth it. \r\n

\r\nI'll reveal more bucket list items as these mail bags continue.\r\n

\r\nI'd settle for the Super Bowl or Final Four, too. Just so you know. \r\n

\r\n>>>\r\nTurn the lights out boys…the party's over. ","mobileBody":"Share

Finally, the most exciting part of the Dawg Post week. And I say that half-heartedly.

Let's get it poppin'.

theburnem emails:

Those will be big.

dunkaroos8 emails:

\"Honestly, in high school I was a guy who could dunk all of the time,\" Boykin said. \"In college I would have had to develop a jump shot if I wanted to be a prime time player.\"

And A.J.: \"I don't know if I could do it. That's rough man. The time; staying stronger; staying in shape for both sports. Basketball is something different than football in terms of conditioning. I don't know. I think I could do it if I really wanted to play basketball, but I really didn't want to do that.\"

And I'll give the nod to dunkaroos8 for the question of the week. Your autographed Darryl Dawkins backboard should be in the mail soon. Insurance if broken or shattered is not included.

And also:

Gates is good. He's got great footwork. As with Harmon, my answer is usually (as you'll see later with Brown, Marlon) the same. It's his performance in practice, or his lack of knowledge and understanding. Or both. Probably both. I just don't think he knows what he needs to know yet. He'd make one hell of a nose guard, too. Will he get it together on the offensive side of the ball? I don't know. But he has the body to dominate if he ever does.

MagicMan31 asks:

Oh, they'll hate. And if they can't hate on Bobo they'll hate on something else. Let's face it, A.J. is the biggest part of the offensive game plan. And for a full offseason (really two-plus years) Bobo danced with visions of conjuring up plays for A.J. in his head. They worked all fall camp, centering things around A.J.'s sticky hands and freakish speed. And then he's gone.

But the hate never disappears, Magic. It's always just below the surface. And it's only an incompletion on third down in the first quarter away from rearing its ugly head.

scottugafan asks:

I'm not sure on T.J. I know it was tough for him. I was on the sideline at Colorado when he took that hit. It was pretty gruesome. He seems to be a different player than Houston. He's obviously more finesse, but he is quicker. I guess that comes with the territory. It really doesn't matter, because I bet you're talking strictly in a sense of production…and T.J. could get there. His frame is perfect for filling out. I hate that the injury cost him some time, and I hope he is granted a medical redshirt for his trouble.

Also suggests:

Well Dean would woodshed me in that kind of competition. I'm fairly certain there are women who can grow better beards than I can. But I'm OK with that because they're circus sideshow attractions, those brutes.

Also:

I think Georgia will win by more than two scores. Without Derrick Locke, I think Kentucky will have some trouble.

SuwaneeDawg03 asks:

BlackDeathD asks:

Well…wait, I'll let you finish.

Well….OK, go on.

Well…I think….

Well, he definitely…

I think…

Haha, I'm just messing with you BlackDeathD. I remember those who have given me the platform in the past. I take care of my valued customers….or whatever you guys are.

I think Aaron is in place to be the best \"quarterback.\" I kind of have Cam Newton in the \"Tebow Realm.\" I'm not knocking that realm, but I think you guys know what I'm saying. Cam is certainly the better \"football player\" right now.

It's tough here in Georgia to always find \"for sure\" playmakers here.

By the way, is it wrong that I find it ironic when I type Cam Newton's name on my laptop. Is it? Really? Just checking. I know, I know, those charges were dropped. Whatever.

tdperk asks:

I, too, have noticed these heated moments you speak of. And I like it. I like a little fire down on the sideline. Not enough to create dissention…but just enough to want to punch somebody in the nose.

I can't get close enough to hear if Grantham and Richt call each other names…so I've invited a tackling machine to enter the Mail Bag. Ladies and gentleman, give a welcome to Akeem Dent, the fourth-leading tackler in the SEC. That's right, 8.9 tackles a game.
