Spring Primer: Defense

ATHENS - With spring practice entering full swing status, Dawg Post sets the defensive table.

Georgia's defensive unit returns most of its pieces from 2010—although Justin Houston (leader in sacks and TFLs) and Akeem Dent (leader in tackles) will surely be missed.

With spring practice hitting full stride this week, here is a quick look at each position on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive line - Obviously the story at nose tackle is what current guys can do during spring while JUCO nose John Jenkins is still a few months away from enrolling.

Kwame Geathers 6-5/350/RSo.

Garrison Smith 6-4/297/So.

Michael Thornton 6-2/287/RFr.

This group of defensive ends is talented, but is top-heavy with a lack of depth. Perhaps Smith and Thornton will be able to play multiple positions across the line.

DeAngelo Tyson 6-2/306/Sr.

Abry Jones 6-3/309/Jr.

Derrick Lott 6-4/309/So.

Freshmen on the horizon

John Jenkins (JUCO), Chris Mayes

Linebacker - Inside linebacker is a position full of interesting players/stories to monitor. Christian Robinson and Alec Ogletree seem poised to start while Mike Gilliard and Richard Samuel have much to prove.

Georgia ILB Christian Robinson has been cited as a leader of the defense heading into spring.
Christian Robinson 6-2/230/Jr.

Alec Ogletree 6-3/230/So.

Mike Gillard 6-2/220/Jr.

Richard Samuel 6-2/243/Jr.

Brandon Burrows 6-3/240/Fr.

Outside linebacker provides perhaps the most intriguing player (Jarvis Jones) on the defensive side of the ball. The position is shallow in depth, with Stripling and Morant still recovering from injury.

Jarvis Jones 6-3/241/So.

Cornelius Washington 6-4/269/Jr.

T.J. Stripling 6-6/222/So.

Ruebon Faloughi 6-5/255/So.

Dexter Morant 6-7/245/Fr.

Jeremy Longo 6-3/251/Jr.

Chase Vasser 6-2/227/So.

Freshmen on the horizon

Ray Drew, Amarlo Herrera, Ramik Wilson, Kent Turene, Sterling Bailey

Cornerback - The top three appear solidified, but Commings could be in line for a move to safety if needed.

Brandon Boykin 5-10/183/Sr.

Sanders Commings 6-2/217/Jr.

Branden Smith 5-11/176/Jr.

Jordan Love 6-0/190/So.

Derek Owens 5-11/166/So.

Freshmen on the horizon

Nick Marshall, Damian Swann, Devin Bowman

Safety- Rambo returns as a starter, but the Ogletree switch leaves the other spot wide open. Last season, the safety position opposite Rambo was a revolving door. Could a true freshman, once again, play early? Will either Hamilton or Williams take over?

Georgia S Shawn Williams started three games in 2010. Could he secure the position this spring?

Bacarri Rambo 6-0/216/Jr.

Jakar Hamilton 6-2/205/Sr.

Shawn Williams 6-1/220/Jr.

Marc Deas 6-0/197/Fr.

Freshmen on the horizon

Corey Moore, Chris Sanders, Quintavious Harrow
