A Line In The Sand

ATHENS - Coach Mark Richt switched up the way the G-Day rosters were decided, creating even more competition in the process.

Georgia coach Mark Richt was finally able to pick the spring game rosters in a method he says he always hoped he could talk his assistants into. Instead of dividing the teams into first and second units—with the first team offense and second team defense on one unit and the opposite for another—Richt picked captains and let them decide.

"Shoot, I've wanted to do that for years," Richt said, "but I always let the assistants coaches talk me out it. When you split the spring game one offense and two defense on the same team and one defense and two offense on the other, it's still offense versus defense in the minds of the coaches. And, even in the minds of the players. But when you split the team--you draft a team, and you split the staff, there is no one unit or whatever. Then it becomes more of the red versus the black. All spring long we've been competing very hard against each other. In the end, I didn't want us to be on the same team."

Quarterback Aaron Murray and cornerback Brandon Boykin were chosen to lead the Black team (Also known as Team211 if you've been following the war of words on Twitter). Linebacker Christian Robinson and center Ben Jones will captain the Red Team (Also known as #TeamJonesRobinson).

The captains then picked teams, complete with a little back-and-forth banter on Twitter leading into the draft.
