Committed Nelson Ponders Redshirt

If all goes as planned, junior college defensive back Steven Nelson intends to enroll at Georgia in December.

Currently at the College of the Sequoias, the 6-0, 185-pound Nelson committed to the Bulldogs Thursday, but the details of his enrollment are still being worked out, he said.

"I committed," he said. "I'm on point academically, and I'll be out in Athens in December and ready for spring practice playing corner and returning punts."

While the former Northside High (Warner Robins, Ga.) standout is anxious to join his future team, there is an important decision to make first.

"If I play this coming season I'll have two years of eligibility left," Nelson said. "Georgia wants me to redshirt this season so I'll have three years left to play when I come in."

While Nelson is solid in his decision, Georgia is still reviewing his transcript and is waiting approval as the final hurdle on his way to playing for the Bulldogs, Scout has confirmed.

Nelson "grew up watching UGA," and was ready to commit once the Bulldogs secondary coach Scott Lakatos offered a scholarship Thursday.

His relationship with the Bulldogs' staff began in December.

"It really heated up when I went home over the Christmas break, and I met with with (assistant) coach (Rodney) Garner," Nelson said. "He wrote my name down and about three months later here we are."

Houston and Middle Tennessee offered Nelson earlier in February.
