Jones Updates Recruiting

ATLANTA – Tyren Jones showed some razzle and dazzle Saturday night against Brookwood in the 21st annual Corky Kell Classic, but when it comes to recruiting, Jones keeps things rather simple.

Elusive and quick, Jones ran for 303 yards and five touchdowns as his Walton Raiders beat Brookwood 35-24. Jones danced his way to the endzone from 71 yards out to give his team the early 7-3 lead, and he later added 48- and 52-yard scoring runs, leaving spectators and Brookwood defenders stunned.

Jones, who is only 5-foot-9, showed why college recruiters have been knocking on his door since his junior season, when he ran for 2,375 yards and received "offensive player of the year" honors in AAAAA from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The evasive runner is equally hard to pin down off the field, often favoring obscurity over the spotlight, but one coach was able to rein Jones in – Nick Saban.

Jones committed to Alabama in the spring of his junior year, and caught up with the slippery 197-pound Jones after his game Saturday to see where he stood with his recruitment.

Q: How is recruiting going for you right now?

Jones: I'm pretty trying to end it. Of course, schools are still going to come after me. But other than that, I have a couple schools still looking at me. I'm 100% on my decision. I might just look at other schools just because.

Q: What schools might those be?

Jones: A: I can't really say yet, but I know I'm going to take a couple official visits soon.

Q: You recently took a trip to Athens. How was it?

Jones: A: It was good. I was just there to support my boy Brandon (Kublanow). He and I made a deal that I was going to take him to Alabama with me, and he would take me to Georgia.

Jones: Q: Have you taken him to Tuscaloosa yet?

A: Not yet.

Jones: Q: Is Georgia still recruiting you?

A: Yes, they are recruiting me hard.

Q: Any chance Georgia will be one of the official visits you take?

Jones: A: I can't really say, maybe so. I'm really cool with the running backs coach, but other than that, I can't really say.

Q: Does Brandon try to recruit you at all?

Jones: A: Of course he does. We'll be in class and he'll say ‘Go Dawgs,' and I'll say ‘Roll Tide.' Other than that, it's just fun.

Q: If Derrick Henry were to commit to Alabama tomorrow, how would that affect you?

Jones: A: It's going to motivate me even more to come in and try to get a starting job and work even harder.

Q: Would you second-guess at all?

Jones: A: I wouldn't. I'm pretty good on my decision. There's going to be competition at any school I go to.
