Wansley Named to the Thorpe Award Watch List

ATHENS -- University of Georgia defensive back Tim Wansley is among the candidates on the pre-season watch list for the 2001 Jim Thorpe Award, which is given annually to the best defensive back in college football.

The award, which is presented by the Oklahoma City-based Jim Thorpe Association, recently announced its list which is derived from a compilation of players named on All-American teams and Honorable Mention charts published by various pre-season football publications.

Wansley, a 5-9, 172-pound senior from Buford, Ga., caught the eyes of many last year as he turned in a brilliant season that included a team- and SEC-high six interceptions. Wansley, who was named to the All-SEC first team by the league's coaches, tied a Georgia single-season record by returning two interceptions for touchdowns. He also finished first on the team with 12 pass break ups.

The list of candidates on the watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists, which will be announced the first week of November. Three finalists will be named on Monday, November 19, and they will be invited to the ESPN College Football Awards Show, which will take place Thursday, December 6 in Orlando, Fla.
