Interest Growing in McClendon

The 2014 high school football class in North Carolina is loaded talent, especially at the skilled positions. Jalan McClendon has proved that he is one of the top juniors in the Tar Heel State.

Last fall, West Mecklenburg High (Charlotte, N.C.) quarterback Jalan McClendon had a breakout season. McClendon already has scholarship offers from North Carolina, South Carolina State, UNC-Charlotte, and Wake Forest. However, since September 1, things have picked up even more.

"More colleges have been contacting me and inviting me to more games – South Carolina, LSU, East Carolina, North Carolina, Clemson, Washington, California, and Ohio State – those are the schools that have been contacting me the most," said Jalan McClendon.

"Right now, the school recruiting me the hardest would be North Carolina. As far as the next school to offer, I think that will be South Carolina."

While it is early in the recruiting process, the 6-foot-4, 185-pound quarterback admitted that there is a group of schools standing out.

"The schools that are standing out the most are Ohio State, South Carolina, and North Carolina," he said.

McClendon recently took his first college visit of the fall.

"I just went to South Carolina (when they played UAB)," said McClendon. "I had a good time. I could tell it was a good atmosphere all around and they have a good football team. So, I'm definitely considering them."

What's next for the talented signal-caller?

"I haven't decided yet," he said. "But I do plan on going to a (North) Carolina game or a Clemson game. "I'm also definitely going to visit Ohio State later on in the season."

McClendon is looking for certain things on these trips.

"Academically, I'm looking to see if they have my major," McClendon said. "I want to major in broadcast journalism. Sports-wise, I'm just looking for a good football program."

For now, McClendon is focused on his junior season and said he will not make his college decision until after his senior season. West Mecklenburg is 4-2 and takes on Phillip O. Berry this Friday.
