Coach Flo's Home Debut A Success

Auburn's new women's basketball coach won her home debut on Thursday night as the Tigers defeated Alabama State.

Auburn, Ala.--Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy's first home game as Auburn head coach was a success as her Tigers cruised to an 80-43 win over Alabama State on Thursday night.

Auburn improved to 2-1 as five players scored in double figures vs. the Hornets, who fell to 0-1.

Five Tigers finished in double figures as Auburn cruised to an 80-43 win over Alabama State Thursday night at Auburn Arena. The win was the first home win for the Tigers this season and improves Auburn to 2-1. ASU fell to 0-1 in its season-opener.

"It felt great to just walk out there and see the crowd ready for us to play our first home game," Williams-Flournoy said. "It was really exciting."

Senior forward Blanche Alverson led Auburn with 17 points while Hasina Muhammad and Chadarryl Clay scored 15 points apiece.

Tyrese Tanner scored 13 while junior center Peyton Davis added a career-high 12 points

Auburn's pressure defense forced 26 turnovers the home team converted into 28 points.

"In spots we looked really good, we were closing up our traps, we stepped it up in space, we got in the line of the ball and we were getting the steals," Williams-Flournoy said. "Then at times we were getting a little tired and we didn't move as fast. Those are the things we just need to work on. The effort has to always be there, because this is the way that we play."

Auburn jumped to a 36-6 lead with 4:19 to play in the first half and led 40-17 at halftime.

"It was definitely an exciting way to go out, we started out strong and all of us had so much adrenaline with it being the first game that we just wanted to go out and we knew we had to take them out early," said Alverson, who was recently named Miss Homecoming. "We kind of let off a little bit going on in the end of the first half, early second half, but I thought we picked it back up toward the end of the game."

Alabama State coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said, "They played a soft press, but with them being so long, lengthy and athletic it caused us major problems.

"We tried to imitate it in practice and put a couple of our centers up there with our guards because we knew they were going to be long. We just couldn't match up with it. That is why Auburn is in the SEC and we are in the SWAC."

Auburn will play Alabama A&M at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Auburn Arena.
