Deacs in Nelson's top five

Monty Nelson was extended an offer from Wake Forest in May. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive lineman from Plantation (Fla.) High School still has the Demon Deacons in his sites as he begins to plan his official visits for the month of January. DeaconSports caught up with Nelson for the latest on his recruiting.

"I'm planning on taking all five of my official visits," said Monty Nelson. "I'm looking at Missouri, Wisconsin, Penn State, Louisville, Pitt, and Wake Forest. I'll probably make my decision sometime after the visits close to signing day. I'm hoping to get a good feel for the program when I get on campus. I'm going to consider how well I know the coaches and the school's academics. Right now I don't have any favorites among those schools. I'm keeping an open mind and seeing how things play out on the visits."

In his senior season, Nelson spent a lot of time in the opposition's backfield. He helped the Colonels to an 8-3 record and a berth in the Florida 7A regional semifinals.

"I had 11 and a half sacks," Nelson said on his season. "I mixed it up playing both the three technique and nose guard. Speed was my main weapon this year. I felt like I actually got faster and stronger as the season went on."

Nelson was a three year starter on varsity at Plantation. He not only needs to select his future college, but also has to decide in what post-season all-star game to attend.

"I have invitations to play in the Nike South Florida All-Star game and the Under Armour Dade vs. Broward game," he said. "I'm going to have to talk to my coach and figure out which one to go to. After that I'll begin taking my official visits."

In the spring, Nelson will wrestle again in the 285-pound division where he's qualified for state the last two years. He says finding a "quality education" is the top factor in making his college decision, which should bode well for Wake Forest in their pursuit of another elite talent in South Florida.
