2016 Review: WR Mykel Jones

A small group of Louisiana freshmen have established themselves as legitimate college prospects. One is WR Mykel Jones, who suits up for the traditionally talent-rich Patterson Lumberjacks. Get the latest on Jones inside...

Mykel Jones will put his wares on public display next week.

"I'm going to the UA Combine on January 3rd and 4th," Jones said. "My goals are 4.40 in the 40-yard dash, a 38-inch vertical and 4.0 shuttle. I talked to Trevon Stewart (Houston true frosh sensation/Patterson product).

"Trevon said I can't beat his 3.9 in the shuttle. My PR in the 40 is 4.48 with a 36-inch vertical."

Jones started this fall for head coach Tommy Minton.

"I had 27 catches for 600 yards and 10 touchdowns," he said. "The season went well. I got into a groove as a starter and was able to come through for my team by making lots of plays.

"My best game was in the playoffs against Notre Dame. We lost, but (elite 2015 WR) Daylon Charlot and I each caught two TDs."

Jones talked about playing alongside senior TE Deondre Skinner (Arkansas commit) this year and observing Jaydrick Declouet (Louisiana Tech) two years ago.

"Deondre worked hard all season and was hungry for the Dome even though we didn't get there," Jones said. "I've picked up a lot from watching him and Jaydrick, and that gave me the will to do what I did this season."

LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M, USC, Oklahoma State and Ohio State are current schools of interest for the 6-0, 175-pounder, who is currently playing basketball for the Lumberbacks.

"It's going real good," he said of the hoops season. "We're 6-3. We're young, but this could be the best Patterson team ever. I'm averaging 14 points, seven boards and four steals."
