O-D Bowl: Austin MacGinnis

Prattville (Ala.) kicker Austin MacGinnis talks the Offense-Defense Bowl and the latest on his Kentucky commitment...

Prattville (Ala.) kicker Austin MacGinnis, a long time Kentucky commit, has spent the week in Houston, where he has taken on kicking, punting, and special teams responsibility for the Blue Team in Sunday's Offense-Defense Bowl.

"We have specific kicker drills and things we go through since they don't have a special kicker coach. There's a special teams coach, but kickers usually have to be their own coaches. It's a cool experience to be out here with the best players in the country. I won't be punting at Kentucky, but I can do it out here. I did a little bit in high school," he said.

MacGinnis is a long-time Wildcat commit and is eagerly anticipating joining the program in June.

"I committed over the summer. I wanted to play in the SEC and kickers don't usually get to go where they want. It's kind of more like what college needs you. I went up there and I fell in love with the program; it's awesome. We just got a new coaching staff and they are great. I'm excited about where the program is headed," he said.

The athlete, who will take his official visit to campus on January 25th, has had the chance to talk with the new staff regarding their on-the-field plans.

"They have a senior, Joe Mansour, who hasn't been kicking field goals; he's been the kickoff guy. With a new coaching staff coming in, everyone has the opportunity to start so I am excited to come in and earn the starting position," he said.

MacGinnis nailed both a 52-yard field goal and a 50-harder during his senior season, and will continue to train until he joins Kentucky's program.

"I train with One on One Kicking, which is in Alabama. I have a kicking coach, Coach Mike McCabe, who actually trains Ryan Allen, the Louisiana Tech player who just won the Ray Guy award back to back. He comes down in the player and trains where I train. There are a lot of NFL guys there," he said.
