Kentucky formally announced the final additions to Mark Stoops' football staff on Saturday, welcoming Derrick Ansley as cornerbacks coach and Tommy Mainord as wide receivers coach.
Ansley, a former Troy University defensive back who coached at Alabama in 2010-11 and Tennessee last season, joins defensive coordinator/linebackers coach D.J. Eliot, defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh and safeties coach Bradley Dale Peveto on that side of the ball.
Mainord, who spent the last three seasons at Texas Tech with new UK offensive coordinator Neal Brown, joins running backs coach Chad Scott, offensive line coach John Schlarman and tight ends coach Vince Marrow on the other side of the ball.
"I was very impressed with Derrick," Stoops said. "I had a chance to visit with three, four or five people about that position, and I always heard great things about Derrick. I had a chance to meet with him and interview him. He was exceptional. I felt like he was a guy that could bring something new to myself and coach Eliot and brings something new to the defensive package. So, very impressed with him, both in technique and in scheme. He's a young guy. He's been around some great people so I'm excited about Derrick.
"And, Tommy (Mainord), with his background with Neal (Brown), was a no-brainer for me."
Stoops Excited About Renovation Plans:
A planned $110 million renovation to Commonwealth Stadium and the Nutter Training Center announced earlier this week by UK president Eli Capilouto was welcome news to Stoops.
"It's exciting," he said. "It is going to have a great impact on our program.
"I think it shows the commitment. We are serious about football and the administration is serious about football. It is a tremendous commitment by a lot of people to make it happen. I think it will have a great impact."
Recruiting Going Well:
The Wildcats have made some waves on the recruiting circuit in the short time Stoops have been in Lexington. The news got even better this weekend as UK picked up a pair of commitments from highly-regarded Ohio linemen Lovell Peterson and Kyle Meadows to go along with December junior college signees Za'Darius Smith and Steven Borden.
"Things are going well," Stoops said. "We have a big group (of visitors) here today. It's been a great response, and I have been very excited about the way recruiting is going, and I feel very good about putting this class together."
Stoops is particularly excited about recruiting his native Ohio.
"I think it's very important for us to get into Ohio, obviously Southern Ohio being very, very close," he said. "We consider that local. And, again, with my ties to northeastern Ohio, and really all through Ohio, it's going to be very important to us.
"There's tremendous football being played in Ohio, so we want to treat that as home base. So, yes, we're going to work Ohio hard along with Kentucky and really anything within a close proximity to UK."
On Disciplinary Action:
Stoops commented publicly for the first time on the dismissal of defensive backs Marcus Caffey and Jonathan Reed.
"Violation of team rules," he said. "We're going to do things right. We're going to give every player the right opportunity and be fair to each and every player on our team. I'll treat those players like I would expect one of my sons to be treated. We'll be very fair with them, but there will be some guidelines, and if they don't mean them, they won't be here."
Stoops was also asked to comment on redshirt freshman offensive lineman T.J. Jones, who was recently arrested in his Myrtle Beach, S.C., home on gun charges.
"I'm going to let the legal process work in that case. We're just gathering information on that right now."
