Liberty TE Impressed with Tulsa
As Kolton Shindelar packed his bags for his official visit, he wasn't sure he could see himself at the University of Tulsa. The 2013 prospect from Liberty (MO) High School had received an offer from his state school just days before, and the pressure to stay home was already mounting. "People are almost expecting me to go to Mizzou because I have an offer there," Shindelar said. "I'm seeing that a lot from people around me, like, ‘wow, it's Mizzou.'" A funny thing happened on the way to Columbia. Shindelar will visit there this weekend, but Tulsa is now the team to beat for the talented track athlete turned tight end. "I was really impressed," he said of the Golden Hurricane program. "I went down there kind of closed-minded. But when I got there, I was really impressed with what they had to offer." "I didn't really want to go to such a small school," he said, shaking his head. "The amount of money they are putting into it is amazing. For such a small school, they have great facilities." Shindelar is still learning the finer points of the tight end position. Having only played football for two years, the state qualifier in the hurdles and long jump has put a premium on coaching. "The number one thing for me is how well I get along with the coaching staff and the players, and how well we click right off the bat," the 6-foot-6, 252-pounder said. "The Tulsa staff treated me like I was one of their own children. I wouldn't even call it a team, it was a family. It's just a huge family." After one varsity season at Liberty, Shindelar knew he would be an under-the-radar recruit. Northern Iowa was the first to recruit him, with Memphis and Tulsa as the first Division 1A programs to offer. Baylor followed suit on Friday, and Kansas State has scheduled a visit with Blue Jays Head Coach Chad Frigon for Monday. "My head coach told me that it would probably happen because I only had 12 games on film," he said with a smile. "It's kind of what I expected. He said once word got out, it would spread."
