La Porte High School finished a deep playoff run in 2013, going 11-2. Now the Bulldogs are looking forward to 2014 and they return a loaded roster, with at least 5 kids being recruited by D1 programs.
One of those recruits is Michael Leagan, a 6'3" 270lb O-lineman who projects as a center at the next level. Scout.com analysts currently have him rated as one of the nation's best, the #3 overall center for 2014.
Leagan has had interest from a myriad of programs: UTSA, SMU, Arizona State, OU, Baylor, Washington State, Houston, Okie State and North Texas. He doesn't have an offer yet, but it's only a matter of time before the first one is extended.
Michael was on the UTSA campus last weekend for junior day and had a good experience.
"Junior day went very well. I liked the campus and how everything is essentially brand new. It seems like an up and coming program," said Leagan.
The staff talked to the O-line recruits as a whole, as Leagan reiterated that most of the attendees were offensive and defensive lineman. There weren't really any details on the numbers that the staff is looking to recruit in 2014. As the coaching staff confirmed previously to IRS, they saved one scholarship along the O-line heading into 2014.
Leagan had other junior day invites, but in the end decided to honor his decision and take in the UTSA program.
"I like UTSA a lot. I think it's a good school. They're coming up the right way. They had some big wins last year and I think they're going to continue their success this year," said Leagan.
He's looking for a coaching staff that works just as hard or even harder than the players. He wants to have a staff that's going to push him and bring out his maximum potential.
La Porte is a three and half to four hour drive down I-10 west to San Antonio. Location isn't necessarily a breaking point though. Leagan would love for his family to be able to see him play as they will be traveling, but overall, he's simply looking for the best fit in a program.
In time, Leagan will begin to narrow things down, but he hasn't set any type of time-line yet.
