Even Mark Richt will admit that he didn't think that James DeLoach would be ideal to play in space at outside linebacker, but that's what's happening. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has liked the way DeLoach sets the edge for some time, and he likes to point out what a good recruiting find DeLoach was whenever he can.
DeLoach's frame – more wide than long – looks like that of a defensive end, but he's fitting in well at outside linebacker. Someone is going to have to replace the production of Jarvis Jones – that should be Jordan Jenkins. No one is expecting DeLoach to come in and be an All-American. Instead, he just needs to do what he's been doing the last year.
With all of that said, Leonard Floyd is one to watch as well. What we know about DeLoach is what we don't about Floyd – can he play the position? DeLoach has earned the trust of the program to take care of the position. Floyd has not done that yet, but if the early reports I get are true... Georgia could have three legit outside linebackers. Jenkins is probably always going to start. DeLoach and Floyd are going to have to fight out on who will be the starter opposite him.
My guess is that the player who winds up starting most of the year is going to be pretty impressive by the end of the year.
