"I'm very curious to see what our defense is going to do," Richt said. "I'm concerned about some injury and lack of practice time, but by this game we'll be in better health as far as safeties who can play."
"It looks like Tray Matthews and Connor Norman will play safety for us," Richt announced.
However, Richt did confirm on Monday he wasn't ready to name Matthews the starter yet.
2. That defense may have its hands full with Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd. Then again, the Clemson defense may have its hands full with Aaron Murray. Richt, being a fan of quarterback play himself, said it should be an entertaining match-up for fans to watch if they enjoy high-powered offenses dueling it out.
"If you like quarterback play, these are two guys that are very accomplished," Richt said. "They've won a lot of big games and lost a lot of big games. They've earned the respect of their coaches, teammates and fans."
3. What should we expect from Norman? We know he's on the team and we've heard his name plenty of times before. However, it wasn't referring to an opportunity of this magnitude. Norman sat down to speak with media today, and said his process of earning playing time has been simple.
"Hard work," Norman said. "It's as simple as that."
Richt credits Norman with having the smarts to be out on the field. Norman is a player/coach for the younger guys.
"Connor understands the system well and he's got the ability to communicate that to the guys who don't know it as well," Richt said. "Christian Robinson was that way for our linebackers last year. I think he's done a very good job for us."
4. For those keeping track of the running backs, J.J. Green and Brendan Douglas are still behind Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. That's what this week's depth chart reads, and it's pretty clear for anyone who watches the one and two tandem play. But, there has been some shuffling for the young guys looking to earn that three spot this preseason. Green has been the guy, especially due to the fact Douglas has been wearing a green jersey the past few days. Douglas is out of green now and back in a contact jersey. He looks good and he's moving around well. Also, he's still very big for those who ask. That'll be a talented and well-rounded group of backs when you throw A.J. Turman back in the mix.
5. Some offensive linemen who got a lot of reps with the number one group today were Kenarious Gates, Dallas Lee, David Andrews, Chris Burnette and Kolton Houston. Just an observation from practice, but those guys looked good. According to Houston, that's a good sign for Will Friend, who has made it clear to his offensive line that he wants to rotate somewhere in the upwards of eight guys.
"In the past we really haven't been able to do that, but this year it looks like we'll have eight guys that can rotate," Houston said. "That's what Coach Friend wants to do."
