Analysis from Scout.com recruiting analyst Brian Dohn
Carter is intriguing because he is only a small portion of the type of player he can be. He is long and shows some good athleticism, but he needs to play faster. His get-off at the snap is decent, but not great, and he isn't overly explosive moving forward. However, he changes direction well and does a nice job of reading plays. His length makes him valuable on the edge, and his looks comfortable dropping into coverage.
At Virginia, I'd like to see him get markedly stronger and explosive. It will take work, but there is a foundation in place for him to build upon.
Carter's recruitment turned upside down very quickly. The defensive end committed to Temple in July, but when Virginia made an offer in November things shifted a gear or two. As soon as the Cavaliers offered, Carter planned an official visit weeks later. The Indiana area high school standout made his official visit to Virginia on December 13 and one week later he decommitted from the Owls and committed to Mike London's staff.
"Just the players, being at home at Virginia, where I was born. The weather, I am more of a warm guy anyway. It seems like football is pretty big, so that influenced my decision as well. It was nice (meeting with Coach Mike London too), he was a real nice guy, really humble. It was very easy to talk to him. Everything was just right."
" (Coaches said) I would probably be like Eli Harold type-of guy actually. I play defensive end and outside linebacker right now, and I feel like I fit in very well."
The Cavaliers lacked depth on both lines this fall, and the coaching staff is making the sure the 2014 class will reinforce the trenches. Carter joins five-star defensive tackle Andrew Brown of Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith, three-star J.J. Jackson of Purcellville (Va.)Woodgrove high school and Episcopal High School's (Alexandria, Va.) Michael Biesemier.
Virginia has no more defensive ends on their board for this class.
