Summer Position Preview: OT

ATHENS - Dawg Post breaks down each position going into fall camp.

Which position will John Theus play – left or right tackle? Looks like left.

Projected Starters: Junior OT John Theus, Senior OT Kolton Houston

Theus didn’t start his career in Athens as a left tackle, but instead played his first two seasons at Georgia on the right side. However, it’s a spot Will Friend and Mike Bobo firmly believe the junior from Jacksonville can play. Theus will replace senior Kenarious Gates, who Georgia lost to graduation. Kolton Houston is projected to start at right tackle, following years of eligibility issues. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound senior out of Buford, Ga. had the position nailed down in the spring, but as we all know, that doesn’t mean it’s his. Essentially, he hasn’t done anything to jeopardize that, so he’s our projected starter entering fall camp. He’ll just have to keep up the intensity through preseason workouts and fall camp.

Backups: Another player to watch at left tackle is senior Mark Beard, who almost wasn’t a Bulldog this season. However, the Dawgs will need him at times. Luckily for them, his February dilemma played out in their favor. He’s in Athens to stay. Beard will also have a chance to play left guard, adding another element of intrigue to the interior offensive line position battles. Another tackle left to fill in the gaps is 6-foot-7, 278-pound Moultrie, Ga. native Xzavier Ward.
