His position coach, John Lilly, sounded a bit frustrated that Rome’s return from offseason foot surgery has been slow.
“He hasn’t practiced very much,” Lilly said. “He’s been out some and he’s not able to go some and so on. That makes it hard. It’s hard to evaluate a guy when that’s the case, but it’s a process. We’re not playing tomorrow.”
Georgia opens the season at home against Clemson on Aug. 30. “You’ve got to be a little bit concerned with his conditioning and how ready he’s going to be when we play in less than a month,” Lilly said.
Blazevich, a freshman, has shown he can compete but Lilly doesn’t know who is No. 2 behind Rome.
“It could end up being any of them right now, quite frankly,” Lilly said.
Move over Josh Murray
It’s been a busy summer in the love department for Georgia walk-on safeties. Josh Murray, the former Bulldog and brother of quarterback Aaron Murray who finished his Georgia career last season, was engaged for all the world to see last week on The Bachelorrete. Bulldogs senior Lucas Redd from Jefferson also proposed to girlfriend Morgan McCorkle of Forsyth on July 22. He popped the question (she said yes) on North Campus in front of the fountains. His teammates, he said, “were fired up for me. They know how much I love her.”
Redd said he’s not the only player on the team who is engaged. His roommate, walk-on receiver Ben Southern from Gainesville, also falls into that category.
Turns out Redd didn’t watch the Bachelorette.
“I love Josh and the whole Murray family, but…,” Redd said.
This and that
The punting competition between Adam Erickson and Collin Barber has continued this preseason: “Both are embracing the competition of the thing,” Lilly said. “The great thing is you’ve got two guys that you feel very comfortable with because they’ve both been in the heat of it before and both performed well at different times. I’m kind of excited to see how it plays out.” ….Hicks has “done a nice job so far,” learning tight end as part of the H-back role Georgia is preparing him to play,” Lilly said. “I really like his energy level out there,” Lilly said. “He’s a guy that kind of some other guys can feed off of. It gets a little hot, it’s football, people get a little sore. Sometimes you need somebody with a little pep in their step to keep everybody going.” … …Head coach Mark Richt wasn’t available to the media Monday but said in a school-issued practice report that he “saw guys pushing hard and fighting hard. I also saw plenty of energy and guys being good teammates by lifting each other up. It was an outstanding day.” ...Georgia holds its first full pads practice on Tuesday. “It’s really football,” Lilly said. “We’ve got all the gear on so we’ll find out a little bit more tomorrow.” …SiriusXM will broadcast from UGA on Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m. with former Auburn coach Gene Chizik and Jack Arute on channel 91.
