ATHENS - Georgia’s first preseason scrimmage Saturday should give offensive line coach Will Friend plenty to evaluate as he tries to sort out a starting lineup.
“Until you really have the first scrimmage and the first game environment, that sort of thing, it’s really hard to tell before you can start narrowing it down,” offensive tackle Kolton Houston
Sophomore Brandon Kublanow is competing for the starting left guard job. Freshman Isaiah Wynn also is a contender there.
“Some days Kublanow or whoever is having a good day and then the next day may not be quite as good,” coach Mark Richt said. “Coach Friend has been mixing and matching the No. 1 unit. He hasn’t settled on a unit yet, but the first and second line is functioning pretty good.”
Coaches feel they have “at least five” that can play and are more worried about which five to start and “if there is going to be some type of a rotation what might that look like?” Richt said.
Houston, Watts Dantzler and Mark Beard can play tackle or guard, Richt said.
“Watts is coming on,” Richt said. “He’s throwing his hat in the ring for a starting position or quality playing time. He’s having a good camp so far.”
John Theus has played only tackle and could win the left tackle spot while Houston could man right tackle. David Andrews is the starting center and Greg Pyke is working at the starting right guard.
