“Coach Pruitt switches up the depth chart every day,” said freshman cornerback Shaq Jones from Palm Bay, Fla., who works at the same corner spot as Damian Swann. “He tells us not to worry about the depth chart because the depth chart isn’t really telling us who’s going to play. He’s telling us to keep working and we’ll find out when it’s time for the game."
Rico Johnson from Swainsboro, a freshman who moved from receiver this summer, said Tuesday he’s gotten first-team reps at cornerback opposite Swann the last two days.
He said Pruitt told him not to look at it like he’s starting and to go out and compete.
“That’s what I’m doing,” Johnson said. “I’m just going out there and competing and giving it my all. …I have a special gift that they don’t have. I have speed. That helps me a lot.”
Parrish, from Brooks County, is working at cornerback and at the star nickel back position.
He had a fumble recovery in the scrimmage.
“I’m not really excited about it, but it feels good that I can perform under pressure,” Parrish said. “I try not to let things like that get to my head.”
He said he may get lost at times pre-snap on defense, but still goes hard every snap. The 5-foot-10, 194-pound Parrish said the star position allows him to play at a slower pace.
“It fits me well,” he said. “I just like the physical part of being in the box. I always wanted to be a linebacker. …This is my chance to show that I can actually play inside the box.”
