Justin Scott-Wesley, expected to be suspended for the first game for his violation of UGA drug policy, now is dealing with an ankle injury that kept him out of practice Friday.
“I tell you it’s still up in the air,” Ball said. “Not because we don’t have the talent, it’s because the competition’s really been good.”
The top two receivers now are Chris Conley and Michael Bennett, although Conley missed at least some of Friday’s practice with what Ball said was related to the shoulder injury he suffered earlier this preseason.
“It’s a work in progress with that group,” Bobo said. “We’ve still got some issues.”
Blake Tibbs was the first name mentioned by Bobo among the other receivers and Ball said the redshirt sophomore “has been a pleasant surprise this preseason.”
Ball said Reggie Davis had an “outstanding” preseason before a finger issue sidelined him for some time, but he’s returned.
Jonathan Rumph has a better grasp of the system, Ball said, and Kenny Towns, who had 10 catches in the second scrimmage, “has been a little inconsistent in catching the ball, but he’ll be fine because he cares.
Freshman Isaiah McKenzie and walk-on Michael Erdman are also in the mix at receiver.
