Commitment Analysis: Van Jefferson

Van Jefferson surprised some Monday when he chose Georgia over Ohio State and Tennessee. It was another huge get for the Dawgs. Jefferson is a Scout 300 wide receiver and Scout’s Chad Simmons breaks down the new UGA commit here…

  • Prospect: Van Jefferson
  • Hometown: Brentwood, Tenn.
  • High School: Ravenwood
  • Class: 2015
  • Position: WR
  • Size: 6-2.5/172
  • Ranking on Scout: | No. 24 WR | No. 4 in Tenn. | No. 179 Overall
  • Recruiting: It came down to Georgia, Ohio State, and Tennessee. It looked like Georgia was trailing in this race, but it was the Dawgs that Jefferson committed to Monday, August 25.

Scouting Report: Jefferson is a smooth wide receiver. He is very advanced as a route-runner. He sets up defenders, he sinks his hips in and out of breaks, and he knows how to create separation. He is not a burner when tested, but he plays fast enough -- as fast as he needs to.

He is still thin and he needs to add weight to his frame -- that will come. He is a natural receiver. He catches the ball with his hands away from his body and his biggest strength may his receiving ability. Jefferson is a very dependable, reliable receiver.

Overall, Jefferson is a receiver who is well educated on how to play wide receiver. His father (Shawn) played at the highest level, so Van has learned a lot along the way. He is long, he can high-point the ball, and he has elite body control. He will be able to play outside or inside receiver on the next level.
