“Clemson never offered me, but I took a visit to Clemson and when I left there, they told me they were going to offer me the next day,” Mason said of a December 2009 trip.
Mason already had a Georgia offer when he left Clemson. He called Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mike Bobo to tell him Clemson gave him something to think about.
Dabo Swinney was completing his first full season as head coach after having the “interim” tag removed a year earlier.
“I can remember going home that night and I absolutely loved Clemson,” Mason said. “It was Georgia and Clemson I was back and forth."
Clemson went in another direction.
"When I went home, they called me the next day and they basically told me they were going to take another route and take two quarterbacks the next year," Mason said.
Clemson actually ended up signing three quarterbacks, including Cole Stoudt, who will start against Georgia Saturday.
"It’s very ironic to look back and it and see I’m on this side instead of that side," he said.
