Gurley A Special Teams Captain

ATHENS - Todd Gurley is considered a Heisman Trophy frontrunner and was a preseason All-American.

You can call the tailback something else this week: special teams captain.

“That’s cool,” Gurley said. “I’m pretty sure David (Andrews) and Hutson (Mason) are going to be a captain every week. Guess I’ve got to get my captain spot spot somewhere else.

Andrews is the offensive captain this week and Amarlo Herrera and Mike Thornton represent the defense.

Gurley was selected after returning a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against Clemson.

Asked if he’s an every game kick returner this season or just for special games, Gurley said: “Nah. We’ll see how it far it goes. Right now, I’m still up there.”

Gurley said he made a couple of offseason visits to Columbia, where he hung out with South Carolina tailback Mike Davis once and talked about strength training and coaches.

Gamecock fans that recognized Gurley asked him what he was doing in town.

“I’d be like, ‘I can’t come to Columbia?” Gurley said.
