Gurley the Frontrunner Now

ATHENS - Todd Gurley is picking up momentum as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner.

Georgia’s star junior tailback sits atop USA Today Sports’ Heisman poll this week. He now is also the 7/4 favorite to win the Heisman, according to, reports

“Todd might not say it as much, but Todd deserves it," Georgia offensive tackle John Theus said. "Todd’s the best player in the country. If we can give him some holes, even if we don’t give him some holes, he makes stuff happen. We want to help as much as we can to reach that Heisman. …That’s something I can say for the rest of my life that I blocked for a Heisman winner.”

Gurley received 15 of 25 first place votes in the USA Today poll. Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota are second and third.

Prescott is 9/5 and Auburn’s Nick Marshall is 4/1, according to the latest odds. Mariota and Notre Dame’s Everett Golson are 8/1.

Gurley was named Monday to the Paul Hornung Award weekly honor for third time. The award goes to the nation’s most versatile player.

Gurley accounted for 187 all-purpose yards against Vanderbilt (163 rushing, 24 receiving) and rushed for two touchdowns. He also completed a 50-yard pass on his first attempt at Georgia.
